Name of part in trunk - 3.2 Carrera

Just started up my Carrera 3.2 and the part (circled) won't shut off and is making a whiny noise. Can't find it online. I disconnected the cable that seems to be attached to the battery. Went for a drive everything seems to be fine. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Cheers. |
Condenser fan, only runs when AC is turned on. Can you tell if the fan is working or not?

The fan motors are known for burning up. Porsche later installed a fuse which you can retrofit to older cars as a kit. Highly recommended!

Just to be clear, this is the condenser fan not the fan that blows cold air into the cabin. With the AC running put you hand under the very front of the car, you should feel some air blowing thru the condenser coil.

This fan should NOT run if your A/C is off (0 position of the blower fan - which is a different fan in the smugglars box) and with A/C on 1 - 3 position, it should run. It makes sure there is enough airflow at any time over hte front condensor and that your high pressure side is actually condensing all the refrigerant gas to liquid again bofore it reaches the expansion valve.
In this schematic it is on L21 'Kondensator Gebläse' (Condensor fan) and you can see the wiring to the relay. Once the central-console switch moves away from 0, the relay (in smugglar's box) gets energised and switches on the blower. http://www.911c1.de/porsche/Schaltplaene/plaene1-10_carrera_32.pdf It is not connected directly to the battery but via a quite large 'shared' fuse of 25A but the wiring isn't made to cope with that so if the fan shorts out, this is a good way to start a fire. There is an official part number somewhere to have a fuse with the same connectors inline so it is plug & play. If yours isn't not concourse-ready anyway, just solder an inline fuse holder in the white-green wire and put a 7.5A fuse in. |
The fan was working when the AC was off but it was making a whining noise. I disconnected it for the time being. Thanks again everyone.
