paint opinion
Hi Friends.
I have a new-to-me 1988 3.2 Carerra. There was a decent size crack in the fiberglass of the rear whale tail present at purchase. I took the spoiler off and took it to a body shop that was recommended by my local respected Porsche mechanic. It took him about a month to do the fiberglass repair and repair the red trim along the perimeter. I was very happy with the work when I picked it up a few days ago. This evening I put it back on the car and noticed a rather distinct color difference. The spoiler is a shade darker than the body of the car. Obviously the original paint will be difficult to match exactly and the pictures may not do the difference justice. Is this expected? I paid about $600 for the fiberglass repair and paint total. If this is reasonable, I will accept it but just a little bothersome given the hefty bill. Thoughts? Ruxin.

That’s what happens when you take it off and take it in without the car. If using just the paint code, it isn’t gonna be an exact match. You should always blend it in with the surrounding body panels

I have heard that red is a biach to match. $600 sounds like a deal by the way.
Take it out in the sun and see how it looks. I wouldn't have noticed from the pic with out you mentioning it. Are you planning on showing the car?

Just for reference I just started a job where I am authorized to spend up to $800 labor and $200 materials to custom match a color that needs to be a perfect match.

What they all said. You have to be expert at matching, and have the whole car there to work with.

Take the car or a piece of the car to the paint shop and have them match it exactly Unfortunately it’s too late now but I think for what you paid I’d be ok with it. Quality red car paint is very expensive.
Good luck with your new car. Just enjoy the crap out of it and don’t dwell on the negatives. Tony |

$600 for fiberglass and paintwork is a great deal. You'll probably be the only one who can notice unless you point it out.

I'm good with tools.

Have you considered freshening your original paid ????? Decontaminate, Clay bar and a superior paint sealant, like C Quartz Pro.......... Might get you results that will make you happy.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I am not planning on showing the car. I agree, I don't think anyone would notice unless I pointed it out. I didn't think about taking the whole car in for color match, but seems obvious now. I wanted to take the grill and metal sheets out and paint them as well as the hardware, which i did myself. Lesson learned. I am happy with the job overall and certainly looks better than before. Cheers.

I would be happy with the deal of $600 as well. And I will agree with what some of the other posters stated. To make it perfect there would have to be color blending, actually onto the other panels, which would have made the bill be thousands. Blending is an art form. If there is a color change from one panel to the next you will always be able to tell. The only way is to blend onto the next panel so the color slowly fades to match.

It also fades really badly with UV exposure. Bumper on my '86 944 would lighten up really quickly; had to clay it every few months or it wouldn't match the body - which was 2-stage.
