Muffler, what an I doing wrong?
 

Removed an after market ANSA stock look muffler to replace with a new Dansk ( 2 in, 1 out) stock replacement, I had removed rear bumper to have repainted. new muffler installed effortlessly- go to install the rear bumper today and the tail pipe on new Dansk is half inch to high. So high that bumper cannot be installed.... what am I missing ?

You're not doing anything wrong its a known issue (buying/getting the wrong replacement) assuming you have a > '74 and got an early unit. When our host sold me the wrong one, despite it being the one on the web site for a 74, they took it back and sent the proper replacement. Was a bit of a hassle but so is having a muffler shop cut & reweld the pipe, which several others have done. There are several threads on this.

Sounds like a trip to your local muffler shop for a slice and re-weld. If you're lucky, it's just a matter of slicing the tailpipe, then rotate it to fit within the opening. The tricky part is finding a muffler shop that creates nice weld beads instead of a facsimile of rabbit poop.

It takes more work, but the muffler shop could just cut and tack it in place for fit and position. Remove muffler and let a real welder finish up with TIG or MIG.

74, ordered muffler the website said was correct for my car.

I was shocked how lousy the welding was on the new muffler, They did a couple of tests on the underside and the blobs looked like bird ahad flown by. Not sure whats going on but not the quality the product was a couple of years ago.

My guess is the wrong muffler was in the correct box with tag reflecting g model

Even if you have the correct muffler for your car, the correct part number, it still may not fit. I've seen both inlets and outlets misplaced, too long, too short, wrong angle, or some combination thereof. Dansk "quality" has taken a very perceptible slide in recent years.

Update:

Exchanged muffler, It appears that the wrong muffler was in the box that was shipped initially. My guess is someone had it before me as it was packed differently than the one I received.

The quality of the welds are much better on the replacement muffler, no poops of weld on the body. The strap cutouts are a bit rough, almost as if they went in after the fact and made them slightly wider.
