Steering rack on 84 Carrera
I rebuilt the steering rack on my 84 Carrera about 10 years ago, so I don't remember the details but noticed it weeping from the two center seals - couple of questions:
1.) Are there seals for these under the two plates? If so where to find - didn't see in the PP catalogue. 2.) Can I remove and replace both seals with the rack in the car? 3.) There is just grease in there correct? What leaked out looked like oil...def thinner viscosity than grease. In other words these racks are not filled with any kind of oil? Thanks

Hi

There isn't any oil in there. Grease only. And there are no gaskets underneath those caps.

Interesting - maybe my memory is better than I thought then because I don't remember oil or gaskets...any idea why they would be weeping from there?

Because the old grease has broken down and the oil has saturated out of the grease?

Take the bolts out, clean the surfaces put a small amount of gasket compound, bolt it back the way it was and give a few hours to cure.
Grease is a whole ‘nuther oil type thread. I sealed my rack rebuild and it’s dry as a bone.
