Antenna issue

I have a manual antenna in my '79 - I just lost most of it when three upper sections decided to abandon ship at 60 mph on hwy. I have a replacement antenna which I had been planning to install anyway but now I realize that I would have to take the door off to do so, which I am not inclined to do, as I have no idea how I would get the pins out nor handle the door w/o trashing it. Is there a way to "exchange" the mast of one to the other, in full or in part?

Any ideas welcome.

Thanks,

Jason

FWIW, I also had to replace the manual antenna on my euro delivery 912E - all euro delivery came with the antenna on the drivers side.

(I think the passenger side antenna are replaceable without a lot of hassle.)

I bought a door pin removal pin from Summit Racing. I had to hit it so hard with the hammer, I was afraid of bending something. Gave up on that.

I removed the door by unbolting the hinges on the door post.
Not a hard thing to do, and I did it myself, as in, one person.

Use faint scribe lines on the door posts, keep track of the spacer placements.

I just replaced my antenna without removing the door. I'm curious why you're needing to remove the door?

If the antenna is on the drivers side, there is no access to the nuts/bolts that secure it to the body.

Is yours a manual antenna mounted on the driver's side (as mine is)? If so, how were you able to extract it? The spacing between the fender and the door when opened is not wide enough to allow removal, at least not on my car.

Jason

Actually - it just occurred to me that I may be able to widen the gap by disengaging the door stop ... hmmm

This is not my issue, as the nut is on the top of the fender, and the lower bracket which holds the antenna can be freed from inside the fender. I just do not have sufficient space to pull it out between the fender and the opened door - the gap is too narrow.

....so, we're back to - if you want to replace the antenna on the driver's side - you must remove the door?

Seems so; from what I can see, removal of the door stop will not make a difference as it is rotating on an axis with no increase in width (space) to remove/replace.

I took my door loose to repair wiring near the bendy part I propped it up on jack stands with blankets and unbolted it as previously described. Did the reinforcement of the door check while I was in there. I think I clamped a 2x4 to it to hold it up. Just needed a few inches.
