I need more AIR.. . . .
I want more air intake for my 911.... I hate my air box cover with
the little hole on the side.... . .. Has anyone ever customized there airbox for more air... I got a spare air box cover and I am going to attempt to modify it for more AIR.. . . . Anyone got any ideas. . . ... Thanks.. . . .:D |
It's been done. As I recall, makes more noise, but not more power.

I've seen Carrera guys take a hole saw to their airbox covers, in an attempt to get more air to the engine. I've also seen SC guys hack off the snorkel on their cover, leaving a large hole, and put a similar hole on the other end of the airbox.
Neither of these approaches do anything for power. The exhaust on a 911 is where the bottleneck is. Adding more intake is not going to overcome where that constriction happens. In a Carrera, it's the muffer, cat, and exchangers - getting a free-flow muffler, a test pipe, and SSIs will improve power tremendously (20+hp). For an SC, it's the same thing. Skip the intake. Hit the exhaust! |

I figured it would not add more power... But more air is always
good... I am going to cut a hole on both sides for fun..... I got a cheater pipe on my exhaust with a stainless muffler and it seems great...... But I have a single inlet and a dual outlet.... I am thinking of putting ssi's on mine but not sure because I have to change my muffler also.. . .... I love the sound of my car now and thats why I think I may stick with my exhaust..... |
old_skul is exactly right. There is plenty of air available through stock air cleaner assemblies. I think Bruce Anderson once noted that they did back to back dyno tests on an SC engine (I believe). One with the factory air cleaner/cover/etc. and one with all of that removed. No change in power output at all.
I even heard a story (from the guy who did it) of running a dyno test on a Pontiac Firebird and - just for the heck of it, they decided to add duct tape to the air cleaner (a big K&N) and re-run the dyno tests until they saw a decrease in power output. They had to add tape until there was only a 4" x 4" square opening remaining.... Mike |
Hey Terry, Funny I was just going to email you today about this very subject.. I have all my parts cut and ready to weld.. But there has been a small design change. What has accured in my intial design I did not allow ample room for the full height of the air filter.. I'll be sending you an updated drawing..that shows the changes. I'm planning on welding this up this weekend. right now I'm working on back dating my heating system.

Sweet. I was planing on starting on it this weekend but the car is acting up. I decided to give it a shot with fiberglass. I bought a few big sheet and some resin. I figure I'll make a model out of wood and then lay the fiberglass over it. The only problem I see is getting the fiberglass mold off of the wood without it sticking. Any suggestion? I was thinking of using some wax paper.
Anyway, keep me updated. |
Hey DMX, As for power gains when modifying your air box the results will be very minimal.. but what you will acheive is a noticable difference on how your engine sounds and I don't mean just air intake sound..
