Installed new NGK plug wires. Wow
 

Hi all,
I just installed a new set of NGK plug wires for my 83SC and I was AMAZED at the noticeable improvement. After just installing them I took the car for a ride and really felt I noticed a difference. But I’ve done that before and I think some of it is just sort of wishful thinking after we’ve been working on our cars. But I took the car out for a ride yesterday and noticed it seem to rev easier, And have better throttle response. It took me a bit but then I remembered that I had replaced the wires! So it’s more than just my wishful thinking, it really did make a noticeable improvement. I should add, I didn’t think I had a problem before, the only reason I replace the wires is because they were original to the car and I figured it was time. Based on the results I got I should’ve done it along time ago.

Also, I wasn’t sure how to secure the wires to the fan shroud, as the original wire set had several rubber separators that attach with a plug into hole in the shroud. I decided to take a razor blade and slit the old rubber pieces, remove the old wires, and insert the new wires. Seems to be working ok for now.

I should add I’m very impressed with the NGK set and I thought it very reasonably priced at $144.

What influenced your choice of the NGK wires?

By the way, if you want to put the slit parts of the wire holder back together, a drop of super glue in the slit will seal them right back up.

Thanks! I went with the NGK set for a couple of reasons. I’m always impressed with their quality, and the price seemed very fair. I wasn’t disappointed when they showed up.

I didn't know an 83SC had a horizontal fan...huh....

Your previous spark plug cables were probably toast. Glad you remedied that.

Thanks for sharing this info. I’ve read several posts in the past several months where folks seem dissatisfied with their new plug wire purchases. Quick Google search reveals part number 54357. Is that correct for your kit? If so, you’ve convinced me this is what I want to replace the unknown age/ mileage ones I have on the car I purchased a year ago. I’m having zero issues, but will do an ignition refresh probably this fall. Share an update here in a few months if you would to let us know all is still well. BTW, NGK wires are the go-to economical & dependable choice for old Miatas. Bought many a set for around $30 over the years! Different price point for wires on these 6 cyls!

Hi. Yes that’s the one. I too was having zero issues, but after reading on this forum that they should probably be replaced because of age, I did so. I didn’t expect much and am more than pleasantly surprised by a clearly noticeable improvement.

It's very easy to measure the ohms. I do it from the inside of the distributor cap to where the spark plug connects. I once found one to be a bit low so I snipped 10 mm of each end and reconnected the spark plug cap/resistor and it's been fine.
