Beware!

Warning: I advertised on this forum and the classifieds for a mirror part for my '85 and was sent a message by this guy:

richardbre075@gmail.com

He sent a picture at my request. I paid through PayPal and never received the mirror part.

Yeah, seems to be a lot of scammer threads in B&S now (which is probably where this belongs). I even had someone that had successfully sold parts here before disappear on me after I paid for an item that he never sent.

Follow-up with Paypal, it's not that difficult to make a claim and get reimbursed. Took me about a month to get my money back.

Good luck,

Mark

I do hope that if you send via PayPal you selected "Paying for a service" instead of "Friends and family". I think the former gives you some recourse, though I haven't tried it. Also use a CC behind the payment. CC may be able to help.

I contacted PayPal and they denied my claim.

I remember choosing a complaint category of fraudulent use of my account which didn't really apply but it was the closest, and they denied it.

Thanks for your replies.

What method did you use to make the payment?

Unless you trust the seller 100%, always select "Payment for Goods" so you get Buyer Protection. PayPal will deduct a 3% fee from the payment to the Seller, and require the Seller to provide a tracking number proving shipment and delivery in the event of a dispute. If the Seller cannot prove the item was delivered, PayPal will refund your payment.

If you selected "Payment for Goods", open a new dispute for "Item not received". If they ask you why you changed the reason, tell them you were confused and accidentally selected "fraudulent use" (which your IP address shows wasn't true) on the first case. If you made the payment using "Family and Friends" and PayPal didn't get their 3%, you're unfortunately out the money with no recourse.

As an aside .
I think it might be Depending on amount , but sometimes you’ll get charged for friends and family too .
I sold some parts on here last week to a “remote” buyer who had a local friend collect the parts , and once he was collecting the buyer paypalled using his phone to mine .
300 bucks I received and sent without charges , but 400 and 600 I got hit with about 30 bucks charges .
Luckily , there are many more good than bad in this community , and the buyer covered the costs .
If this wasn’t a deal very much the same as “cash and collect” there’s no way I would even receive friends and family payment , let alone send using it .
Simply not worth losing your protection for a small percent on high dollar parts ....

^ If a Family & Friends payment is funded by a bank account, there's no fee. But if the payment is funded by a credit card, then the fee applies (in which case you might as well make the payment as "Goods"). Maybe that's what happened?

All my paypal is funded by my bank account which makes me think it might be depending on the total

Take a close look at the current terms and conditions. The no-fee option is no longer called friends and family. I think the old terms specified that F&F was not to be used for buying goods. Now they don't tell you that, instead they just say it gives you no buyer protection.

That would be a good move on PayPal's part, lots of established forum members were probably sending F&F payments but not mentioning an item or shipping address with the payment, to stay under the radar. Might as well just simplify the options to "protected" and "not protected".

I just looked at my paypal .
Didn’t read t&c ( I’m a guy , I don’t read manuals )
I started a payment to my buddy who I did the 300 backwards and forwards with last week , just to see what the options where without actually hitting send .
Interesting results ....

So it seems it’s not related to amount , as long as amount is covered by my paypal balance .
And this is what happened last week with Jose .
It also seems I’m not directly linked to my bank Account , when using a debit card directly linked to my bank account.

^ You should blur or erase the last four digits of those account numbers. It would probably be hard for someone to misuse them unless they have more of your personal details, but no sense giving them anything to work with.
