Is it possible to mount flares too far forward?
Picked up this 72 as an abandoned project. Have the mechanicals decently sorted so now on to paint and body. The car has glass RS flares, my question is the position of the rear wheel in the arch, normal?

Does it look like the torsion bar lines up with the torsion bar hole in the flare ?

Maybe they tried to eyeball it without mounting the wheel and having the suspension unloaded.

There are at least a couple of old race cars out there with altered wheel bases that moved the rear wheels further back in order to get more weight on the front end and reduce the oversteer problem. Watch this video. Jim Busby starts talking about 4:58 into the video.

This is the bumper, so this would have to move forward several inches too correct?

What size tires are those? It looks like the tires are shorter than stock.
I would take some measurements from a stock car and see what is going on. I almost used FG fenders on my car.....

It looks like the rear bumper is glass too , that’s why I asked .
It’s pretty easy for an “artistic amateur” to make fibreglass go wherever you want , so if said amateur put fenders on in wrong position they’d simply modify the bumper ends to suit . Pics of insides of a rear bumper end should show if it’s been cut’n’shut at all .. |

So where is the actual spring plate center relative to the torsion bar access hole in the flare?
This will tell you if the flare is relatively rearward compared to its supposed location. Looks like it also may be hung low.

I’m thinking there might just be a mechanical problem and a bodywork problem , hence my request for more photos .
It’s easy to say the fenders are out , as the Torsion bar holes are nowhere near . But looking at an lwb dead on the side-view , edge of rear 1/4 windows lines up with side of Fuchs center-cap . It’s an angled photo so harder to see this and easier to get photos of rear arms as I asked , But swb -lwb arm difference is about 60mm ..... |
