Looking for my first Porsche
I am looking for my first Porsche. My father has an 88 911, which I drive often and perform ALL of the maintenance. Unfortunately I cannot afford a newer 911 suitable to use as a daily driver so I have been looking at Boxters. I have found a 1999 guards red boxter with 50000 miles off of a lease for $24,000. Is this a good buy and what reasons are there to buy or not buy this car. Other than a small dent near the passengers side air intake, the car appears flawless. It is also on sale at a reputable dealer. Can someone give me advice and opinions on boxters. I am specifically concerned about performing maintenance since I enjoy working on cars and *saving money* by not visiting the dealership.

A P-car is a P-car and Im sure youll be pleased with any engine/cooling variation you choose.
You might find a few more opinions about the 986 on the Boster forum, however. Good luck!

You can afford 25 grand, but not a suitable daily driver??
My '88 was just under $20K and sees at least 15K miles a year.

As far as Boxster go, the early ones did have some engine problems. The quality of the fit and finish is also not as nice as, say, the 88 Carrera you mentioned. I would buy a really nice SC or Carrera for 15-18K, put the rest of the $$ in the bank for modifications and/or repairs and have a blast. You seem to know how to work on the air-cooled cars already.

CD,
If interested in an earlier p-car, let me know...I can help with the search locally. I'm on the northside of Indy and would be glad to help, maybe you just need a ride in an earlier car for comparison.

I do prefer the air cooled cars. The reason I am leaning toward a boxter is because I would feel less guilty driving a boxter in the middle of the winter than a Carerra. I already have a daily driver also, but it would be tight with that and a 911. I am looking for a daily driver that I can hopefully trade in for a collector in about 5 years. I would LOVE to have an 87 to 89 right now, but it would get too beat up driving it around Indy in the middle of the winter. Also, the newer boxters have a few more creature comforts than the Carerras. Thank you very much for all of the opinions, and please keep them coming!
JR Indy: Where are you in Indy? I am in Broadripple, and used to work in Zionsville. My fathers Pcar is an 88 espresso brown targa which I frequently drive to the north side. |

CD,
I'm in Noblesville actually. I drive an 86 red coupe that is garaged all winter. I don't use it as a daily driver either, but it does get driven. I find this a good compromise. Would be happy to go for a drive. Let me know.
