Wayne, before you make any changes, check out the BBS at finehomebuilding.com in the "Breaktime" section.

AND DON'T MODEL IF AFTER THAT!

this may not be possible...but how about if when starting a thread you have to check off a topic...like general...DIY...problem...racing...OT...that the thread belongs in

and if in each person's CP you can select what topics you want to view on one screen...some people can select everything and when you log into the pelican 911 forum you see all the threads that you've check off...a problem solver may want to see only thread about car problems...a performance junkie may want to see performance mods and racing...

but all the threads themselves get routed to their respective forums so that if I want to check out topics that are not on MY PERSONALIZED forum page I can go to the sub forums to find them

it is alot like the customizable Yahoo or MSN home pages...you can select exactly what stocks you want to see, what news you want, the local weather etc...but it would help make each user have a customizable forums page...

with customizable pages it opens up alot of possibilities...you can remind owners about maintence parts they may need by keeping track of their orders...customize the pop-ups based on what threads they select...have people enter their approximate milage per month...and have a pop up come up when they've gone approx 3000 with all the parts they need for a oil change...a pop up when they need a valve adj...fuel filter etc...a window with all the parts they need...they can just hit the order button to complete a sale

I hate pop ups...but ones that remind me what maintence I need...I'd actually appreciate that...and make it an option...some people may not want to be reminded...

you could even combine the different porsche models so a guy with a 944 and a 911 can see all the relavant threads on one page...

just a thought...

Well this thread has doubled since last checking it, so I thought I'd chime in as most of the posts are very compelling.

Why do I come here everyday?
If I don't I'll get way behind in keeping up with the posts. Period.

If I could keep updated once a week, I would. I can keep updated on the Canadian forum once a month in about 3 minutes.

I truly love being able to learn about my car, but I frequent here because of the personalities of the people here. There is alot of wisdom here, and not just about cars.

My vote; keep it the same. Bump the blatant OT stuff, but getting to know these people is the "magic" for me.

Wayne,
Why not post a thread once a week/month about your in-house deals/ history/ etc. and then new traffic would be exposed to your services -?
I've enjoyed your "Waynes idea of the month posts", exposes a bit of your personality.

My $.0125 (Which is 2 cents Canadian funds) ;)

I too like it the way it is. Even instituting stricter "rules" about what and what is not OT, OT will still sneak in regardless and you're back to square one. Manually moving threads OT is the simplest and most full proof way to de-clutter and we still have the choice of reading it anyway...for fun, grins & sense of community.
Cheers

OK.. Maybe I have simplified this too much...but I guess I have always thought of this section as the "Porsche 911 forum" and not so much the "technical" forum.

I'll admit i've been an OT offender on more than one occassion (:)) but now I try to post on the OT board much more.

But...I still seem to post or add to posts on this section if I have anything 911 related.

So If I post something that should not be in this area...please banish it to the OT section...I won't be offended. :) SmileWavy
