Turbo, there is a recent thread discussing how to remove, adjust and service your sunroof. I suggest a quick search? It was very helpful to me.

I suspect few differences with the exception of the air deflector. Best of luck

Thanks, but I need someone that knows the difference between the 73.74 motors and mounting. I have a 74 Carrera with 73 motor and mounting. I need to understand a why I can use the 74 motor. It just doesn't fit. Or If I can send my motor out to get rebuild etc. Its slow and weak, especially right when the sunroof ends closes and then pops up.

Suggest you simply help it by pushing up and forward as the roof is closing. The cables do tend to break and lubrication is needed. Also there is a hose that connects the motor to the transmission that wears out also.

New cables, motor tested and the piece between is what is considered the clutch.

Here is a picture of what I thought was an early one with the later one next to it on the right. But neither of them are made for a side mount like yours. Not sure. As pointed out above, there are a lot of issues before you get to the motor can be causing your problems

From 73

This is from 73 and my Carrera is 74. I think I need a new motor and trans even though the both work. IDK

I have one just like yours that wasn't working when I got the car (73) . I found two problems:
1. one of the crimps to the motor wire failed and was not electrically making the connection anymore.

2. the grease in the cable tubes had congealed making it overly difficult to drive the cables.

1. Whats a crimp?

2. Tubes are all cleaned out and new cables installed.

Frustrated. lol

the crimp is a mechanical connection where metal is bent with a plier like tool to make an electrical connection between a wire and a wire or wire and a connector. The crimp I was talking about is where the wires that comes out of the sunroof motor are attached to the wires from the car. If your sunroof motor is working it sounds like that isn't your problem.

did you de- fuzz the cables and do they slide through the tubes without a lot of resistance?

Agree with Jeff, The crimp point is a weakpoint in the design - I had the same issue with my 75 motor. You could literally reach up while holding the open button (what can I say I have long arms) while jiggling the wire into the motor and it would work sporadically.

DeFuzzed!
Motor working properly.

Sunroof will get to the point where it needs to pop up and won't.

ok, making progress ! exercise it giving it some manual help (don't overdue it and overheat the motor). still not shutting on its own? - disassemble and thoroughly clean all sliding parts. if you have done that already try a dry lube. If you have eliminated all the resistance it might just be the older motor/trans doesn't have the power to do the job anymore.
Recently a Porsche acquaintance told me he has modified later sunroof motor/ trans to work. If you finally give up on the original motor and trans, I can provide you with his name and contact info if you pm me.
