Time for a 993...

I think I have finally reached that moment that many of us dream about - shopping for a 993. Got the bank's ok yesterday and am a week or so into my research. I really prefer not to buy from some "Hank's Tanks" used car lot and would especially like to take a clean example off some Pelicanhead's hands. I'm looking for a clean '95-'96 black, silver or slate gray C2, with black or gray interior. I would really be happy if the wiring loom, DM flywheel and clutch had already been taken care of.

Of course, this also means I'll have to sell my fussy, but beloved triple black Carrera. Fortunately, I don't have to unload her first. I refuse to be Porsche-less, even for one day! So if anyone has some leads, please send them my way. Thanks!

Hope your search goes well, Richard. I'll keep you posted if one "close to home" becomes available.

Richard, You know we're all jealous! Good luck with the search and I'll keep my eyes peeled for one too.

I'm sure you already know about the variants of the 993 series, between the C2, the C4S, the C2S, Turbos, etc. Another thing to watch for is the late '95 and on cars have the Varioram technology which is good for significant horsepower and torque gains. I'm always looking for the right 993 to buy, and it'll be a '96 or later because of that.

The '96 and on with Varioram do have more horsepower stock.... but they are also OBDII and are much more difficult to modify for more power.

I had a '95 993 that I modified with RS Suspension, a Fabspeed chip and exhaust and some air cleaner mods. Running at Road Atlanta with several friends with later model 993's my car would always walk away on the straights. You can get excellent power from a mildly modified '95 993.... more than the stock later cars. If I were shopping for another I would only consider a '95 because of this. The fact that they are cheaper is a bonus!

don't rule out the '95s Richard. they run very well with a rennsport chip. also, remember that the wiring harness problem runs into the early '96 models too. it is a factory recall, so should not cost anything. '95s should also have their rear alignment specs updated to the later specs. good luck, max

Max, I love your car. That's just what I want. I think I'm gonna keep whatever I get stock for a while. I did just about every upgrade there is for my Carrera. And while I learned a lot in the process, it was just a never-ending snowball and bled me dry. I'm figuring payments on a 993 will run me less per month than I was dumping into my Carrera in repairs and upgrades. Warped logic, but just about true. Ironically, I think H4's were the best bang for my buck in my Carrera. Litronic in a 993 will run me a little more, eh?

Marc, I'm not gonna mess with this car. I'm keeping it stock except for when repair/replacement becomes imminent. As for more horsies, my first experience on the track last weekend proved to me once and for all that driver skill trumps hp every time. There were 996's out there that I could almost outrun in Fred Flintstone's car and my Carrera did just fine. The quest for more hp is such a slippery slope and if half the $$ I spent on power upgrades had instead gone toward DE registration fees, I'm sure I'd be faster now.

I had the same experience using Lu's 73E at Summitt Point's Jefferson Circuit this past Saturday. I think performance mods are required. Marc, keep your Garage and Grille open, OK?

Hey Jim! Just what the doctor ordered!

Just remember, you'll also need suspension updates.

Rick Lee say it isn't so! I almost spit up my snack when I saw this thread. What's the NoVa gang going to do now for a working laboratory???

Guess this means that you will be riding shotgun to Hershey with the intent on driving your new car home, huh? Good luck with your search.

How did I know this thread would deteriorate once the NoVA gang got a whiff of it? Tonight I replaced (without calling Marc in frustration) the ball cup bushing in my shifter assembly. That was a lot of fun. Last weekend was new plug wires, oil change and chip swap. Two days earlier was rear sway bar welding. A week before that was cam timing. A week before that was mixture analysis and cam timing check. I've had enough!!! I'm ready for a 993!!!

Well, since you won't be doing any work on the new car then I guess you'll be getting rid of all your tools and manuals which should create some weight savings, no?
