Installed the SS kit from our host. Very happy. Less "driving a school bus" feel and none of the shifting issues mentioned. Yes...physics can explain the slightly higher effort...but it is minimal.

Add some length to the shift lever to restore the reduced effort of any SS kit. It's surprisingly effective with a trade off of slightly increasing the throws. That loss is offset by having the shift knob closer to the steering wheel.

To confirm, remove the shift knob and insert a 3/8" drill bit (or equivalent) into the hollow lever and test drive.

Arne2 my experience with the SS in my '86 is the same as yours. I would expect more effort needed w/ the SS, but smoother shifts & easier adjustment with the non-SS surprises me. I guess you expected to see those improvements when you did the switch. Why was that?

I expected the improvement in coupler adjusting, the smoother shifting was an unexpected side benefit.

The issue I had was that the reduced travel meant that the shift lever was not moving far enough forward on shifting to 5th to let the lockout cam swing into position. Adjusting it so that the cam would clear the lever didn't allow full travel into 2nd and 4th. So a slightly longer travel lever was needed.

You would think so, but the design is more clever than that. There's two pivots, and only one is moved. Which is why I'm disappointed that my photos are gone, because it showed how it works really well.

I did a google image search and coincidentally one of your photos came up. I see what you mean now, you were right. Interesting that Porsche built them this way.
