Stainless Steel Muffler

Tell me how to be sure that a muffler is Stainless steel. I am tempted to buy one used 911 muffler , owner says it is SS , but was not sure.It is looking like any muffler , some surface rust was visible. Not much.

Any markings or something like that , to tell that it really is SS? Or any other method of testing it?

I believe most stainless steel is non magnetic. See if a magnet will stick to the muffler.

Tried with a magnet , it DID stick!!! It has some numbers and a date 11/80 . Were stainless steel mufflers even available then?

I donīt want to pay the premium of SS , and then finding out that it is a normal , rotten one....

I have no first hand knowledge, but I have read on this board that some SS mufflers are stainless on the outside but use regular steel for the internal baffles.

In the case of my new "S.S." Dansk, Neil is right.
Using a magnet, the shell is indeed stainess, but you can see spot welds on the outside where the baffles are welded in. The magnet sticks tightly in those areas.

Some stainless will attract a magnet, but not as strongly as the same size and thickness of normal steel.

Doug is right about some of the stainless mufflers with their having normal steel being used for the internal baffles. These do rust out eventually and the muffler can be louder. Believe that SSI mufflers are going to be completely stainless while the Dansk can be a mix.

I believe Monty mufflers are 100% stainless, inside out, baffles and all.

Stainless Steel Inc. (SSI) produces only the heat exchanger and some headers. The muffler is by others.

When I picked up my SSI's directly from Brad Roberts, I asked him what sort of muffler he'd recommend with their product. He said Dansk which is what I bought.

On Monty.....I almost bought one. John Walker likes 'em, they are well made. That was good enough for me. Until I met a SC/ Monty owner. He said the resonance around 2200-3000 rpm was driving him crazy! There were also some comments to that effect in the archives of this BBS.

So it was Dansk for me, and I'm very happy with what I bought.

I'm running the Dansk 2 in 1 out at the end of my SSI's. The sound is nice but not "droney" like a ricer.

Thanks. It was also my impression that they didn't make mufflers, but Joeaksa's post got me thinking maybe they did.

The thing is:

I have a pair of SSI's on order with Wayne.

I haven't ordered a muffler yet.

I want 2 in 1 out (my own small survey tells me 2 in 2 out always produce resonance).

I want to keep the flat six PORSCHE sound. (have heard systems that sounded like a fourcylinder BMW motorcycle or a US V8 engine)

Cheaper grades of SS are magnetic. OE mufflers are SS but are the cheaper grade and are magnetic. They do rust but not a fast as if they where mild steel

BLOWN , thanks.
Well , that would make sense. It was old , but not that bad.So I believe it must be somesort of SS , cheapergrade or something.

MIKKEL , arent DANSK mufflers made in Denmark? Why not order your muffler directly from them?Just a thought....
