Seats for tall athletic drivers
Can anyone recommend a good seat that will fit is a 911 for tall drivers with big shoulders? I have tried Recaro expert and the shoulders are tight, I have some Porsche hard back sports seats and they are also very tight around the shoulders. I am 6'5", 230lbs and have approx 33 inleg, I have a G series, and owned 996, 991 and also own a 997 and I am becoming convinced that I will never be comfortable in a Porsche! (although I keep trying!) - any recommendations would be appreciated.

I’m the same dimensions as you. The best overall thing you can do is buy a non sunroof coupe, or delete the sunroof like I did. I have the stock rails and a “tall man” sport seat that was custom made by Stephan at GTS classics. It was modded from a comfort seat. It has a longer thigh, deeper butt, and taller head rest. It’s brilliant. Very comfortable and no need to lower seat rails which is a huge pain. Combined with a 350mm Momo I drive comfortably. For my new car I bought recaro pole position ABE which are wider in the hips. I plan to lower and move the seat rails back in this highly modded car. -also it’s a non sunroof coupe.

Tillet from UK
You will have to mount way back. Possibly add some to the track. It will work. Last edited by faverymi; 08-12-2020 at 03:49 AM.. |

Earlier Manual Seats
Dreamin,
I'm same dimension tho an inch shorter. I have manual 80-84 sport seats in my '84 sunroof Carrera, they're pretty good. Not snug and a smidge lower then stock seats. The sunroof doesn't help but I wouldn't do without it......the main reason I don't own a Cayman/718 BTW. I can put the seat back far enough, but have an extension ring on the steering wheel to put it closer to the far back position. I suspect your issue is simply ceiling height? Do you have an '85 per chance? '85's have higher seat rail, for one year, I was told an inch and used to own an '85. Several folks suggested that I have the seat mounts lowered and re-welded professionally. This may have worked but the fuel lines run through the tunnel near the location and I elected to pass. There are a few threads that deal with taller driver issues, these go much deeper on the issue, may be worth a search. A combination of a few small things may help you keep your Classic P-car. Good luck

Another suggestion for a seat from Stefan at GTS
I have some and love them. My car is a sunroof car and I deleted the sliders and mounted the seats directly to the existing rails in a fixed position for a lower seating position. Works great for me. |

Are the standard comfort seats uncomfortable for you?
I'm only 6'2", but i found that an aftermarket steering wheel with several inches of spacers was helpful - i can lean back a bit more and not have to reach out so far.

The best seats in the world for tall people (I'm 6'4") are the 996 GT3 seats. I got my seats in 2006 for my 996 Carrera, and have had them in my 993, my two Boxsters (986 and 987.2), my Maserati 4200GT and now my 1987 Carrera. The seats and rails fit all these cars. I have lowered the seats by raising the rearward mounting holes in the fiberglass shell. Perfect fit, and comfortable enough for 12-14 hours road trips. They are expensive though... I paid $2,800 back in 2006 for the two seats including rails, today you have to pay over $4,000 for used ones!

I've got the Recaro Specialist on stock mounts and it works for me at 6'2" in a sunroof coupe. It's significantly lower than the stock comfort seats were. On racecars I weld in new lower mounts (for rollcage clearance). That could be an option if you can't find low seats you like.

I'm only six feet so not super tall, but I just put some Recaros in my car and can confirm that they put you at least two inches lower than stock comfort seats. With an LX-type back and A bottom, I think they'd fit big guys well.

Thanks all for the advice, I have tried Recaro specialists on modified rails, so the issue isnt with head room, it is more that the seats arent wide enough in the shoulder area and bolsters around the middle a bit tight. I dont consider myself overweight. I had a 991, same story with the factory seats and a 997 with hard shell sports seat, same story, too narrow in the body / shoulder area, I have enough head room and in the 997 the seta is back far enough, just not comfortable. I will have a look at the GTS Classics, but looking for seats I can also put in the 997 and the style probably doesn't suit. Scheelmann make an xxl seat, that is longer in the back of the seat, but it looks like the seat is to wide for the 997. I have some Recaro SE's, I might take them to a trimmer and get them to shave the bolster and lengthen the seat squab, that may have to do.

Sit in a 72/73 with sport seats. You sink down in without being too tight.
