Looks like i may need to install an oil cooler in my 72 Targa.
What would be the best direction to go

I read your other post, so I know you have a 2.7 in your car. While 2.7s are less heat tolerant than others, I'd drive the car a bit first to make sure you really need a cooler. Whether you need it or not will depend on how and where you drive the car. Spirited but not hard road driving in a mild climate may not need the cooler. (Unless you have working A/C. You'll probably want one in that case.)

Adding a cooler to a '72 is again, a bit different than other years. While the coolers are interchangeable between most years, the piping and thermostat bits are unique. You will need the oil filter console from a '72 911S, or have your existing console custom machined to add the thermostat and open up the fittings for the cooler plumbing. I'd recommend taking a look at the cooler kit page at Elephant Racing. They will likely be one of the few sources for the special piping for a '72.

My 1973.5 needs external cooling to keep temperatures acceptable on the track.

I went with a factory setup. That includes the brass lines, and a trombone cooler. If you go with the cheaper braided rubber lines that I sometimes see, you will need a larger oil cooler like the carrera cooler. This because the brass lines add a meaningful amount of cooling capacity.

The 1972 is unique in several ways and you will need to either find a factory setup, or be willing to do some engineering to get the parts to work properly.

Where in Oregon are you? If you need an "expert", I would turn to Rothsport Road and Race.

I love it! Leaving a small house at the beach for a big shop in Bend. It’s been 20 years in the works. Can’t wait. Thanks for all your input. I’m gonna need all the help I can get.

The 72 is unique with the forward oil tank. This requires a little different approach than other years.

I would start your journey by reading this.

1972 911T External Carrera Oil Cooler Install

There are several ways to accomplish the goal but they will all require oil console mods and a return line to the bottom of the tank. Be aware that some 72T cars do not have the right tank. They did make them without an oil level sender and also without an return line fitting on the bottom of the tank. If you have one of these (like I did) you will need to purchase a new tank.

I had a 2.7 and it needed a cooler! This was in the Santa Cruz area.
