Spring plate reinforcement...advice requested
 

I have an 87 M491 (wide body) that needs rear spring plate bushings.

I'm planning to use the Rebel Racing solid bushings and while I am there I plan to replace the spring plates with the adjustables.

I don't much of a history on the car and I have no known issues in driveability, structural integrity/rust. All in all a pretty clean car.

While I am changing the bushings and spring plates out, I'm considering doing the reinforcement plates as a preventative measure. I have a good MIG setup and welding training so I don't have any concerns there.

For those that have been down this road, would you recommend I add the reinforcements, or just skip it?

I have over 15,000 track miles on my 911 and broken lots of stuff but the torsion tube/spring plate area is stock.

Luckily I have an Arizona car, so there is zero rust!

I think you can skip it. If you want a welding project, work on the rear sway bar mounts :D

Check for cracks? If none, I don't think it is inevitable that you will develop them in the future. And if you do, you can first weld up the cracks? My '77, which has seen hard track service since 1985, hasn't cracked there. Not to say it, or yours, never will.

Probably no downside other than some $ and time to do the plates, though. Not like you are paying shop rates.

Rear sway bar mounts would be a good start ... i welded mine three times before i decided to go ahead and install the beefier Wevo units !

They will crack ,it's just a matter of time ...

Agreed that sway bar reinforcement is more critical.
