Paint gurus, please advise...
I just had my targa roll bar painted a gloss black to match the body on my Carrera. It looked ok (not fantastic but acceptable) at the shop, but when I got it on, I discovered, lo and behold, that it looks too black and all together too wet and soft looking relative to the factory black finish, which is like new. My question is, will the paint fade slightly during the curing process and look more "hard" after it's fully dry (I don't know if you'll understand what I mean by hard)? Compared to the original finish, the paint looks extremely fragile and more orange peely, but the less than perfect finish is not what's bothering me so much as the color and tone. I'm wondering if I should take it back, or swallow the 200 bucks and get someone who knows what's he's doing to take care of it. Thanks.

You mean the paint on the targa bar is too "shiny"? If the used paint was high gloss, well, it will never become dull. This is why I removed the paint from my targa bar and painted it with matte black spray. Came out just fine.

Sounds like your shop used the incorrect paint for your Targa bar. Look at the recent Wurth paint thread as another Pelicanite is pondering the same decision. The finish is a satin or semi-gloss finish, not a shiny or completely matte, flat or dull finish. Sorry to hear of your disappointment, take your car to a reputable shop that works on high end or Porsche only cars.

Fassi--
perhaps you can go back to your shop and have them reshoot the bar with the 'correct' black paint. targa paint thread

Thanks for the responses. I actually wanted to match the body since my car is black and I will be tinting the rear window. So the bottom line, if I understand you all correctly, is that the paint will not change slightly as it cures. I guess I'm out 200 bucks. I doubt these guys will be willing to redo it. Dealing with body shops is a real hassle sometimes. I don't know if it's worth the trouble to fight it.

With all due respect..I don't understand why you say it is a "hassle" to deal with body shops. From your own words on this thread..."I actually wanted to match the body since my car is black"..... If these were the instructions that you left the shop with...and now you find a black shiny finish...what's the problem? Maybe the problem is not communicating your desires *clearly* enough to the shop?? Maybe...your instructions should have sounded more like "make it look original" ?? Dunno...maybe I'm wrong here ? ---Wil Ferch

-- Maybe I'm missing the point. Maybe you want the same finish as the car. If so, perhaps have them buff out the old paint on the rest of the car ( to be more wet looking and shiny) and work on the orange peel of the new paint. Then, it should match better. Still..if you wanted "factory"...you would have needed to say so, I guess. ---Wil Ferch

Good business, means good communications on both ends. Expectations should always be up front to what and how things are to be done. Also a degree of research needs to be done by you to see what your body shop puts out in terms of quality. Check references.

Will,
Right, I wanted the same finish as on the car and I provided them with a paint sample. I did not want the paint to be darker than original. The old paint is very well cared for and buffed out to near perfection. It's not a question of old vs. new paint. People seem to think that black is black. Unfortunately, that is not the case. The are various shades of black and different degrees of gloss, not to mention the particular characteristics that different types of paint exhibit. I had my trim ring covers done by another shop and they match perfectly. I wasn't able to use them this time because they are far away. If I recall correctly, Black Beauty had a similar problem with its headlight trim rings. If you've ever had to go back to a body shop to have them correct sub par work on a relatively simple paint job, you might understand why I say it's a hassle dealing with them. How much should painting a roll bar that had been sand blasted cost anyway? Thanks again for the advice. |

Perhaps color sanding the bar and then a good rub out will bring the new paint closer to the old paint.

No problem at all. Honest opinions are always appreciated. I'm going to attempt to color sand and we'll see what happens. Hopefully I won't make it worse.

Sounds to me like the bar is clear coat over black while the car is solid black paint w/ no clear coat. They will never match.

There is no clear coat on Carrera paint? Are you sure?

I think non metallic paint has no clear coat, while metallic paint does - I'll have to check some of my stuff to confirm that.
