Window rattle found - now what
 

I have located the annoying rattle in my drivers side window, you know the one that goes away when you raise or lower the window a bit. It's where the cross arm attaches to the horizontal part that bolts to the door. It seems to have a pop rivot as the pivit point and this may have worn to cause movement and vibration of the cross arm.

So what next - I don't wish to replace the regulator - what (if anything) can I place between the cross arm and horizontal that won't bind, but stop them touching. I am thinking of a small piece of foam rubber - what do you suggest?

I replaced the felt on my window and lubed the regulator to stop my rattles. I had a similar problem as you and found the new seals and grease took up the play and worked pretty well. I was a little too cheap to go for the regulator although I am sure it will be done some day.

I can try just lube - what is recommended, would have to be pretty thick?

You might be able to take the reg out and fix it yourself. That would be a lot of work if it didn't fix it. Mine does the same thing and I drive with the window down a C-hair.

I really do not wish to remove the regulator, i may try to put a little flexible hardwearing foam in there and lube it well.

I notice on some of the other door panel threads that most panels have anti rattle foam glued to the back of them - is this usually the case or only on the earlier panels?

I bought the felt from Pelican, pretty sure it's the same for my SC as your 86. It came off with a putty knife and some patience, you dont have to remove the window. It did make my window up/down a little slower though, I guess the motor is due someday.

Sometimes the felt drops down. If so roll the window down and pull it up with a screwdriver.

FYI: I had my felts replaced and it didn't make a difference.

Unfortunately the felts are good, so I have carefully stuck a 1.5mm piece of neoprene rubber between the rattling parts - it does not seem to interfere with the operation but has fixed the rattle - yeah!

OK, so I've got the same problem in my '86 930 -- window rattles when up, and gets better when rolled down 1/2 inch. In my case, it seems like the roller that fits in that horizontal rail is loose. If I tap on that roller I can hear the rattle. Sounds like your problem is in a different place. I can't see where the neoprene would be applied for my problem.

In any event, does anyone out there have a good solution? I'm thinking bending the moving beam attached to the roller might preload the roller enough that it would not rattle. Has anyone out there tried that? Any other solutions? It looks like taking the mechanism out is a real b*tch, so I'm not inclined to just try things without some encouragement from others that have had some success.

How about plastic cable tie around the rail to eleiminate the metal on metal problem?

I've got the same problem...

I've tried plastic cable, rope, and metal cable, all temporary fixes. Over time they loosen up and the rattle come back. I've been trying to fix this problem since the day I got the car. I think it comes down to replacing the regulator. :mad:

I'll keep my eye on this thread, maybe one of you creative types will have a permanent fix. :D

Jeebus, these things really are overgrown Beetles huh? My window does the same thing... silicone...everywhere possible. The passenger regulator bit the dust the other day too, not looking forward to pulling it apart. Good times, good times.
