1977 911s Low miles- what to do now?
Hello all,
I’ve been a long time viewer of this forum but am only now able to consider myself a participant as I’m about to take ownership of my first Porsche. The car is a 1977 911 S with under 50k miles, a perfect body, chassis and interior. I was able to buy it for a price I’m happy with and very excited to finally own the car I’ve lusted after for the past 30 years. Now, I know that the 77s are the black sheep of the family and that they have a unique set of issues. That said, I also understand that for every issue there are well documented and thorough solutions so I’m not dissuaded. I plan on using the car as a daily driver to and from work (8 miles round trip) and for fun excursions ![]() The car was a California car and has the air pump and thermo reactors installed as well as factory ac. I’m debating on whether or not to bother trying to get the ac working again or just ditch it. In Chicago the ac is nice but not totally necessary. I suppose I could recharge the coolant and then evaluate from there. The big question is what to do about the engine. No real issues- it’s clean. I’m torn about either running it as is until it fails and then either rebuilding it or replacing it with a 3.0 or doing a lot of preventative maintenance now in hopes that I won’t have to replace it. Things that I was thinking of doing (some myself and some through a shop); -Changing the 5-blade fan to an 11 blade -Removing them thermo reactors and air pump (no emissions test required in Chicago for this age car) -Changing out the trombone for a proper oil cooler. It seems that either approach will cost a bit of coin but I’m conflicted as to which would result in the best experience with respect to both driving and owning. So thanks in advance for any replies to this thread and the inevitable torrent that’s to come ![]() ![]() |
