SC Bumper shock travel

Ok,if you remove the pressurized gas in the bumper shock how much travel inwards do you think they move.I want to tuck the bumpers in a little more.I estimate about 2 inches.I think tomorrow I will look for one to put in my press and check the distance it moves.Anyone know the answer?Happy Labor Day to all.Ciao Fred

Faapgar, I got rear ended a couple of years ago, I’ll attach a photo of the end result. It surprising how much they will handle on a direct hit.

direct hit

Hey cpa,a picture is a 1,000 words.Great photo.I believe the bumper shocks were made by Bilstein and are filled with Nitrogen gas like the struts. So I drill a small hole and let it loose. Then I can move the bumpers forward to create the desired tucked look. When you find your view of contentment just a tack weld on each side to keep the point. Thanks pelicaners you guys are great.Fred

The accordions then become too long.....

The accordians do not become longer. They are shorter when the bumpers are moved in.I have been to the Islands and maybe you drank to many Chi-Chis made with OJ & Coconut juice and lots of Vodka. But thanks for your input.Goodnight

I owe you an apology.A chi-chi is made with o.j. instead of pineapple juice. The vodka is exchanged instead of the rum.Last time I was there was 81 0r 82 and I flew 1st class with bar upstairs. So maybe a 767.Anyway a week after our flight the same plane had a pressurization problem and the plane came apart above 1st class and a certain amount of people were sucked out and plummeted to their deaths in the Pacific Ocean. It was the same plane I flew on.Back then you could smoke on the plane.I drank the Chi-Chi drinks and smoked some hash in the Loo.Travel has never been the same. With The Covid I am not sure life will ever be the same.Ciao

Fred, Our Alaskan/Hawaiian friend is more right than you give credit for.
The accordions do not 'squish' as nicely as you would expect. When I tucked the bumpers on my car, I had to drill new holes in the bumper blades to mount the accordions accordingly.
And with the accordions moved further 'back' on the rear bumper blade, I found myself modifying the rub strip so the accordion would sit flush.

Tucking bumpers is not so simple as just letting out the oil, and tacking them in place.

Also, my rear bumper shocks had oil to dampen the travel, but the support was provided by a coil spring inside the shock. As with all things air-cooled, beware the slippery slope.

I did mine with the euro tubes. Many small bits and pieces to attend to, but nothing really hard to do. A bit of work, but pretty straight forward. Well worth the effort, if you ask me.
