Bosch 6-pin CDI Printed Circuit Board

I posted this on the older Forums "6-pin SC/Turbo CDI unit repair documentation " and "History of Bosch CDI ... trouble shooting info, parts list changes, and schematics ... " but suspect that these are not rarely read. Hence this new thread.

I am in the process of repairing my Bosch 6-pin CDI (1982 Porsche 911 SC Targa) and have noted the changes suggested to date in the Forums due to obsolescence / no longer manufactured components. It would appear to me that total rebuild to the original Bosch design (albeit slightly modified) would be more time/cost effective.

I was wondering if anyone has manufactured the original Bosch CDI printed circuit board, suitably modified to accommodate currently available components, on fiberglass (FR-4 glass epoxy)? If so, how do I acquire several on these boards or the artwork?

Otherwise, I will create my own artwork and build locally (in Sydney).

We make a complete modern replacement PCB but the components are surface mount.

It’s unlikely that someone would produce a PCB design with a combination of old and new components. As soon as you get in to the design, you would start to question each component and soon find that pretty much all form factors for components have changed. E.g. a modern 0603 surface mount resistor is about 2mm long compared to 15mm long. Then there are all the metal posts that the flying leads attach to. EEs don’t design things this way anymore.

Having said that, the PCB is fairly simple. Producing an copy would be easy enough. Not sure the PCB is a common failure point though.

What changes are you referring to?

Sorry for not getting back sooner - COVID19 has had an impact down under.

1. Jonny H - yes I am aware of the Classic Retrofit unit but the cost & freight with the Australia Dollar currently around £0.55P, the overall cost in Australian Dollars is beyond my budget. Besides, I have a preference for keeping to the reliable original Bosch design as far as possible, technology changes notwithstanding. (From my Naval time we had to source what parts we could find to keep out of date electrical equipment running.)

2. 7783911 (Almost Done) - thanks for the offer. Buying a refurbished one is the last option.

3. mysocal911 - the changes are those referenced in the 7 page Forum at hyperlink: https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/203100-6-pin-sc-turbo-cdi-unit-repair-documentation.html

Cheers, Ian

Pointing us to the part where the change you refer to is mentioned would help here.
