Restoring: 69T Current project: rust removal with pictures.
I have a 69 911T targa that I am restoring. Currently, I'm working on the rust problem. The rear floorpan had some small rotted areas, but I decided to replace the front and rear floorpans because they are cheap on restoration-design.com, and I want it to match. I just received the floorpans from restoration-design.com, and I highly recommend them. Today I was getting ready to intall them. I was removing all the interior carpet and side panels and noticed padding behind this. Some carpet will need to be replaced, and I plan on purchasing replacement carpet at hershey. But I noticed weird padding under the carpet sort of glued to the floorboards, and the carpet glued to this padding. Behind the side panels was a tar-like padding, and behind the rear panel was a cloth like padding. This was glued to the sheetmetal, and I don't know if I should rip it off. I would like to rip it off because I want to redo the interior, and make it like new. I would also like to access all metal on this car to remove the surface rust. But, I dont know where to replace this, and don't even know what it's called which Is why I can't find replacements. Should I remove this padding, and where can I find replacement? I have never seen the padding sold anywhere. But it was for deading sound vibrations, glued to the metal to stop vibrations and quite the car. There is another alternative called vinal lead used in music studios that cuts sound by about 30 db. It is as thick as vinal. Or you could use the material that you would use for the engine trunk liner. You can buy this in sheets.

You could probably replace both the tar paper and padding with Dynamat. ("Asphalt polymer used for sound & vibration damping.") Don't know if Pelican carries this or not. Probably.
It's a good idea to check under there, too, coz when I stripped that area I found some pretty nasty rust happening. Charlie White

OK, well I looked around and it looks like "dynamat" is sold at ************************.
Here are updates on what I did today: I decided to keep the sound proofing that's behind the rear deck: I decided on this because there was no surface rust higher then the seat bottoms: It's much cleaner now, so clean that all that's left is shinny metal. Next step is floorboard replacement. I have the replacement floorboards in my garage, I just want to do more research before I install them. The floorboards, and jack lifts are the only problems. Once I replace these, my car will be solid. There are small rust bubbles on the car's paint in some areas, but this is not a problem because I'm going to have the body sanded to bare metal before it's reprayed. Here is a picture of the jack lift: can someone tell me the number I need to order at restoration-design.com to replace this? I don't know much about porsches because this is my first one, but I do know if there's rust by the torsion bar tube it's over. How's mine? I can get more pictures if you tell me where to shoot. Solid all around this area: I found something that might be a problem when replacing the floor pan. Behind the front tire is a dent in the corner of the floorpan. I know exactly what caused this. I'm preaty sure at some time the owner ran over a muffler on the road and dented the pan right behind the front left tire, because this is exactly what happened to my pathfinder: I'll keep you guys updated. Next big project is installing the floorpans. Thanks for the help!

i woudl search for alternate sources to perf products...there stuff is always pretty pricey...call around some local car stereo shops...Best buy and circut city do installs too...I bet you can get some from them for cheap

Torsion bar looks ok, right?
Anyone know exactly what part(s) I need to order to replace that jack lift area? RallyJon - Very nice, I checked out your website. Are you sure the original color was tangerine? Looks like signal orange to me. Wow I just looked at your carpet install, I'm realy going to need that page! Thanks alot, not installing carpet wont be half as bad as I thought. 82SC - Thanks, I'll try that out! BTW, has anyone bought from classic car carpets on ebay? They are located in germany and reproduce porsche carpet. I think they have a couple auctions going on right now, and prices beat the 700 dollar carpet at pelican/performance products. I doubt they are selling domestic carpet, because they are located in germany, so domestic carpet to them is german carpet.

Check your torsion bar area with the same screwdriver. Then you will have your answer. Its not over if they are rusted but its not an easy repair.
