Pink wheel wells
Yes, it’s question day for me…
I need to do something about my pink wheel wells- Guards Red is pink where it was applied lightly to the gray Wurth Stoneguard by the factory. I thought that my wheel wells were coated in baked on grime, oil, dirt. It appears that I was right, but that beneath it all is what I think is Wurth high build undercoat (applied over the Stoneguard). After pressure washing, I am left with some crusty, But not oily, areas that look like high build. The car is a 1985 911. I’d really like to clean up the wheel wells and spray them with the high build, but I’m concerned that doing so may not be appropriate, and will devalue the car to some extent. I like black wheel wells. Did the factory coat them in high build over the Stonwgaurd? I have seen pics of restorations of older 911’s where the wheel wells were left painted factory color… What is correct for my car, and is it a big deal if just coat them black? My only other 911 was. 1974, and it was black, so everything was black!

Chipgaurd with factory overspray is original.

By high build do you mean like some kind of off the shelf undercoat? I would say no.
Looks like the pressure washer is doing a fine job of removing it. Don't get too aggressive with the powerwasher, but continue to remove the black gunk and then hand finish with a cleaner. Body color on the older cars is always better, even if it's pinkish at this point. I don't love seeing pooped on black undercoat in anything pre 89.

Thanks guys.
By “high build”, I meant Wurth High-Build Underseal, as sold by our host.

Get a stiff bristled brush and some dawn dish soap. Clean wheel wells are a thing of beauty!

I did this a few years ago.
Degreased, sanded, primed and painted. Very rewarding to look at afterwards. Before: After:

I think the "black stuff" is remnants of 80's rust proofing. I striped rustproofing and grime from my guards 84 with dawn, superclean and gunk engine cleaner. An aggressive cleaner like gunk turns the paint pink color. My 84 stoneguard is light gray. The tub had good paint coverage but under side of fenders and rear quarter had the light factory overspray. I touched up the stone guard with the UPOL gray product and sprayed a light coating of single stage paint to blend in. I also used a low pressure power washer with wide nozzle with car on lift and a cheap kids outdoor flip open pool to catch water and crap. Look for rust under stonegard, if found scrape off, correct, primer, apply new and touch with paint. Greasy fingers videos shows him doing the clean and touch up.

Those wheel wells look really nice when painted like that.... I think I do like it better than the black aerosol Wurth stuff.
I may follow suit by touching up the stoneguard, priming and spraying some more India Red- the engine bay looked pretty dazzling after I spent a bunch of time. primed & painted. Fresh Red always looks awesome.
