Trialling door cards, thoughts?

My 1970 Targa is finally back on the road after a couple of years work. Back to the original colour Signal orange with a fresh interior. My aim was to not originality but simply to have an original feel that's to my liking. I'm trialling the door panels, I took out the padding on the upper door cover so it's slimmer, made a door pull from an old price of leather and added a custom surround, and the early VW door handle. I'm happy with it but time will tel!

I like it. The hard edged square-ness of the bright trim around the door pull is a bit harsh compared with the curves of the arm rest but that's picking nits. Overall this is a brilliant solution!

Looks awesome, great job and thanks for sharing. I've got a similar ethos, classic look but a personal twist on it. If you don't mind, where did you source the perforated material from? Is it leather?

Thanks. The material is the vinyl square weave sold here by Pelican Parts per metre.

Thanks. I agree with you about the surround, I'm on the lookout for something retro I can use or make another that's round on the ends.

I think it looks great!

Aesthetically, I suggest adding a couple more fasteners to the outside vertical edges to "fill" those gaps.

Functionally, you might want longer door latch pulls. I have some that are ~4" long and passengers who have never seen them still have trouble figuring it out with instructions.

I think just rounding the corners of the latch pull surrounds would help a lot.

I too am looking for similar, lighter door card alternatives, nicely done. The square weave adds authenticity. I’ve been looking for a door pull/arm rest just like yours. Can you be more specific about which VW year and model it was sourced from?

Love the early 70’s safety colors.

Those VW handles are 68-72 so period correct, just a different car!

Looks great and something that the factory would have done. Nice use of the VW handles.
