Damaged Throw Out Bearing? Plastic Liner Type - Also updated guide tube seals

A quick question, I am just preparing for a clutch change. I have opened the clucth kit (sach) and then inpecting the throw out bearing, i think the "plastic" liner which goes on the updated throw out bearing guide tube looks split (this is for a g50 which had the rubber clutch).

Can anyone confirm its split? I know it looks obvious, but what i mean, is is it 100% that there are not supposed to be split?

Car is an 88 911 3.2 with the old style rubber clutch and associated parts, ive upgraded the clutch shaft and fork.

I am also changing the guide tube to match the throw out bearing. The screws wont move. I'm waiting on some Left Hand drill bits to arrive, in the mean time can i try some heat, or will that kill the trans seal?

Does the updated guide tube also have a seal (in addition to the trans seal), the bentley manual metions it, but i cant see it in the diagrams.

Luke

That's they way they are. no seal on the guide tube. The phillips screws on the tube are broken loose with a proper size phillips bit in an impact tool you hit with a big hammer.

Hi John,

I thought you might be first to reply.

Ok noted. Split in T/O bearing sleeve is normal, who would have thought. Ok noted, no need to return that.

Next point. Okay, got it. I had a go as you said, and they broke loose, no need to drill as suggested required from another post. Happy days =)

Ah i can see, now, just a trans seal, the bentley mentioned an additional o-ring for the guide tube, toilet paper as usual.

All sorted then. Nice when some of the problems are simply solved!!

thanks and all the best =)

John, i trust you with my life. I'll followed your knowledge and advice, it time and time again, and its always been right. Can i just double check that the split circled in red below, is what you noticed when you said they are all like that. It does look like the plastic is split, perhaps thats in manufacture.

I can confirm the TO bearing split. I had to look it up and check when I did mine too. Would save many of us some time googling if there was a slip of paper included to let you know that the split plastic is on purpose.

I believe the factory manual calls for loctite on the guide tube threads. And don't forget the Olista Longtime 3ep and Optimol MPO as needed.

Hi John,

Thanks for that, thanks for taking my double confirmation with a pinch of salt. I just needed to be 100%. Mucho appreciated =)

Ok noted on the loktite for guide screws and the greases, i needed to know which ones they were!

Olista Longtime 3ep 000.043.024.00
Optimol MPO 999.917.788.00

Olista on the guide tube (great for any metal-to-plastic surfaces)
Optimol on the clutch spline (great for any metal-to-metal surfaces)

Enjoy

No grease on the guide tube per factory. Dry.

Hi John,
Just curious- there was a 996 TSB to coat the guide tube with Optimol MPO (same plastic inner TO bearing sleeve). Wouldn't that apply just the same for all of the models with that setup? Seems like a good bit of friction for dry surfaces when the TO bearing slides across the guide tube.
