Question early or late model 930

I'm looking at buying a modified 79 930 that was done right with high (450) hp and rsr suspension, or a very low mile (7000) 89 930 with the g-50 5 speed.
Any ideas on what the best move would be? Does anyone know how much a k-27 and larger intercooler and adjustable boost would cost?
And how long to the stock 89' motors run typically until top ends need to get done or whole rebuilds?
Thank you for your input! This should be my funnest porsche yet, and if anyone knows of the killer deal on a 930 let me know.

I vote for the G50 Turbo. The only 5 speed and the last year of the 930. It'd be an easy choice for me. My guess is that the low mileage 89 will cost waaaaay more than the 79.

I'm with Mike. If you can swing the entry fee, go for the 89.

If you are going to modify anyways...why pay more for a later model 930. I have a '78, which came with the larger (Euro style) fuel head which is good to about 450 HP in peak condition. My car is also exempt from the emissions standards. There are some very subtle performance differences in the early 930's that should not be overlooked. With a high HP 930, the G50 is not always the best setup. With my 4 speed and the powerband of my '78 powerplant, I have little trouble leaving a G50 car behind before shifting into second. The 4 speed is also arguably better to some on the track. The early 930's weigh less and also have the 917 style brakes.

I have a '78. Virginia has a 25 year rule for exemptions. My '78 was also catalyst exempt from the factory. They only came with thermal reactors and an air pump.

Rick has some good points. It really depends on what you want to do with the car. If you want a nice, reliable car that you can easily take to 400+ hp with the standard bolt-ons, I would go with the 89. However, if you think you will mod this thing until it is 700 or so HP, I would get the 79.

I am pretty happy with an 86 with the standard bolt-ons, but I have not had a chance to ride in a SUPER Turbo, like Amac's or Juan cars. I would think about it now because you will spend a LOT more if you start with a stock 89. (assuming the purchase price is what I would expect it to be. i.e. 35K+)

Either way, you are right. A 930 is a TON of fun to own and drive.
