Just dented my sump plate - big deal or no?

Sorry if it's a stupid question but.. I just went to do my first oil change and I must have placed the jack poorly. I've jacked it up plenty of times from this point before but must have gotten lazy. I'll order a new one but is this something I should be concerned about?

If doing an oil change right now. Take it off flatten out the plate and reinstall it.

Let me chime in....

I used to subscribe to the technique of using a phone book as padding lift my SC rear up at the engine case. NEVER AGAIN!!! but why ??

Because I did it once too many a time - and I disturbed the sacred engine case O rings that connect the two halfs of the case - resulting in a fatal oil leak.. the fix was complete engine disassembly replacement of the o rings - re-assembly of the engine - cost of my mistake was ~$9,300 .

when you think of it - lifting the entire rear end - and the center of that lift point is a seam - and ANY violation of that seam and the internal o-rings = disaster... your call...

I only lift at the designated jack points now > yeah I wish the older 911s had a center lift point - but it is what it is...

I agree.... I know everyone that does this refers to the old Porsche photo of this being done.
What did the car in that picture weigh? What does your weigh? That was a new Porsche....how old is your block?

Those are both really good points. I'm inclined to agree with you after today. I would be really interested in knowing the other safe jacking points on this car. The front is just as challenging. Where do you place the pads when your putting this car on a lift without damaging that little weld seam?

I don’t use the sump as a jack point but the last pro did.

So perhaps he knows the proper technique.

While many folks, published and learned owners alike, suggest lifting the rear end using the engine, I don't recommend it. The engine wasn't designed as a vehicle structural element and no amount of padding negates about 1500 lbs. of force concentrated at the lift location. There are other methods to raise the rear end that don't stress the engine crankcase.

BTW, the only sealant between the crankcase halves is a thin film of Loctite 574 or equivalent. As in all things, YMMV.

That is the pic I was referring too....what did that early 911 weigh? What does the average SC/Carrera weigh? How many hundreds more pounds?
How old was the block in that just made car...how old is your block?
What does an engine rebuild/re seal cost?
Won't even mention magnesium cases that always need a line bore on rebuilding....the first time I saw that recommended I laughed....and what is Ferry saying in that picture..."Dummkopf, use the lift points"

and Ferry could get a new engine for free whenever he wants. use ramps and most of the time you wont even need to jack it. if you do then jack it on the suspension arms at the shocks.

Here's the pic of Ferry Porsche and a 911 lifted by a very German floor jack. This photo was used in the Pelican Parts tech article and by others to illustrate lifting the rear end (Sugarman):

For many people, this confirmed the engine is a recommended lift location, or does it?

I'll confess to having jacked by the sump plate, but I'm more comfortable jacking from the front edge of the case where it at least has some vertical support. May not be possible on all models.

Ferry Porsche pointing out the fact that with someone lying underneath the car maybe we should use jack stands.

As far as i remember we had in the 1980`s, Porsche factory floor jack at the shop-similar to the pic above. It had a flat plate with side brackets..it was placed right under the engine-those side bracket served for balancing the engine while it was out.It was was a perfect snug fit right under the sum plate and one for removing engine and trans. together .Also later plate with cut outs for the Carrera case to fit.
I wonder if any the older boys remember that one?

Looks like where the engine and transmission meet..

I use hockey pucks between the jack and whatever surface I'm jacking against.. have a half dozen where I keep my jacks stored
