Here’s a link to an old for sale ad on the forum. It’s got some good pictures. I’m interested in having a go at making one too. I’m trying to figure out what’s best to use for the battens. Please keep us posted on your progress. FS: Carbrella for 911 Targa (aka Sun Cover)

Re materials, I intend to speaker to a fabricator i know to determine the best material soft, pliable, waterproof and durable the next step based on your findings will be the use of the stays to create strength but without too much weight and of course how to space the stays to allow folding but offer some degree of rigidity i dont expect this will be an over night project and hope others will also chime in (Targa folks..jump in!)

I measured my car last night, approximating the width of the carbrella based on where the ends of the carbrella land on the targa bar. That width is about 51". The depth from the ledge on the targa bar to the windshield is about 32" I plan to prototype it in cardboard. Now all I have to do is buy a major appliance so I have a piece of cardboard big enough.

I would suggest convertible top material. Readily available and waterproof. I would use headliner material, the foam type in modern cars for the inside. Binding would be convertible top welting. Interior panels would probably be 1/4" Marine high density polyethylene.

I wouldn't use my carbrella as a substitute for my targa roof when parked in the rain. FAR too easy for water to leak in from the front / back when it's on. While I use it a lot in nice weather, it mainly serves to hide "shiny things" inside my car when parked. FYI, it affixes to the rolled up windows using suction cups. Would think that some sort of sunbrella fabric (stuff used for cushions on patio furniture, etc.) would most closely match the material used on both the inside and outside of the carbrella (and it's relatively waterproof too), with some form of semi-rigid plastic to provide rigidity inside of its panels.

makes sense if we can get one of the carbrella owners to give us exact measurements of that original unit..we just need to find someone who has one?

Darrin My intention is more like at the golf course or in the driveway so leaves etc dont poor in..if unexpected rain, at least I have some protection to give me time to run and put my soft-top or Hard top on

Darrin, If I send you a big piece of paper and a pre-posted envelope, would you be willing to trace the carbrella and send the paper back to me? I will then distribute to other people.

A guy on my woodworking forum turned me onto signboard materials called Diabond and Alumalite. They appear to be plastic cardboard clad in aluminum. Very stiff, but also light so it won't sag under its own weight.

I'm happy to help out -- why don't I start by shooting some fotos (carbrella with a tape measure on top of it to clearly show dimensions and some side=on photos of the carbrella on my car). I'd also be happy to trace it out on paper and mail out -- to be candid, mine's not going to last forever and I too am interested in helping facilitate a replacement. Sounds like we're all looking to use it for the same purpose -- keep the car "safer" when parked with the roof off, not as a replacement for the roof itself. Should be able to find time to substantively follow-up in the next few days (max) -- FEEL FREE to bug me/bump this thread if I don't

Carbrellas weren't space shuttle Apollo 13 unicorns... I'm sure if you measure your own targa car you can come out with your own revolutionary 2020 improved design. When you come out with one I'm a buyer. Mine is a little ratty....
