Need advice on thermostat 0-ring and temp switch R/R
 

Hi all,

This is an 85 Carrera. I'm replacing the fuel lines (see other thread). I have the RH side intake manifold off and decided to replace the temp switch and thermostat o-ring. I don't have a Bentley's yet, so if someone can point me to a DIY thread on these or offer your advice/guidance, that would be greatly appreciated. I did a search but am not finding what I'm looking for.

I've got a bunch of questions, so please bear with me:

- do I need to drain the oil to replace the switch and thermostat O-ring?
- what are the torque specs for the thermostat bolts?
- Is there a torque spec for the switch?
- what's the best way to get the wiring harness out of the way (it's routed right over the top of the thermostat)?
- any other tips or tricks for each would be so appreciated! The 101 Projects book just says to replace these, but I don't see details on how.

Hey Mark; I recently changed the O ring and sensor on my 930, which cured a bad leak. It's straight forward and there is great info on multiple threads for all of your questions if you run a search on this site. You'll want to uber-clean the area around the cover of the thermostat so crap isn't dropping in. The biggest challenge for me was the wiring loom that travels through the firewall - it was a PIA to pull the rubber grommet out enough to get the loom out of the way. You have a conduit which is better that my setup (wires only), but you'll have a tougher time getting it out of the way. Not a technically challenging job but one that requires lots of patience and perseverance. Some drop the engine a few inches for better access.
