1983 euro gas tank vent issue/question

Hello all

When I open my gas cap I have always heard a fairly sizable whoosh. The gas tank hasn't collapsed but based on lots of reading it seems possible. I do not have any gas fume smells, which I am happy with. I have followed the vent lines through the expansion tank in the frunk and then to the evap canister in the LF fender. I also looked a the parts diagram. What I think I know:

- My euro does not, and never did, have a line beck to a charcoal canister found in US models. Euro models vent to atmosphere in the LF fender
- The attached picture from my LF fender shows a "vent valve", that was added before I bought the car, in the line from the frunk to the bottom of the evap canister.
- The line out the top of that evap canister terminates in the fender and is currently plugged. The plug also clearly was added by someone before I owned the car. It's not a golf tee but very similar!!!!

Questions:

Should the line out the top of the evap canister simply vent to atmosphere with no plug in the line? It seems like plugging this line does not allow air to get back to the gas tank and potentially is causing the whoosh.

Should the purge valve be removed as it's not part of the original venting system? If it's removed, can I expect to have gas smell?

Thanks in advance

Thanks. I believe to add the charcoal canister I would need to run a vent line from the front fender through the center tunnel to the engine bay, mount the canister, and then add a line from that canister to the airbox. I am not sure I want to tackle that as I think the key change is the purge valve someone added. I may be under thinking this but all the ROW cars presumably vented fine without the added charcoal can.

This year i renewed all hoses of the fuel venting system.
In the front of the car the venting system is still original.
The metal tube through the tunnel is still in perfect shape.

The charcoal bucket in the rear was removed.
I connected the hose coming from the tunnel, directly to the air intake box.

No whoosh when i open the fuel cap.
No gas smell in the car interior.

Thanks, the PET confirms its not a factory “feature”. I pulled it and I can blow air through it from either side and neither side holds vacuum. It seems it isnt functioning at this point. I then tried compressed air from both sides of the metal line in the front fender, inlet below the fuse box to the left front fender. It is clogged so this seems to be the source of my venting problem. So far I cant get anything through that metal line to unclog. The other lines in the fender area are clear.
