ID these dash knobs? 1970 911E.

Just wondering if anyone can tell me what these do... wiring is hacked, so I can’t test anything.

What I’ve surmised so far:

A- gas flap
B- ? Momentary push
C- lights/gauge dimmer
D- emergency flashers
E- ? On/off
F- trip reset
G- gas heater
H- ? On/off
I- cigarette lighter
J- ? On/off

Left lever - signals/high beam
Right lever- wiper intermittent?/slow/fast/ washer.

B - Who knows, not factory.
E - With that type of a switch, typically rear windshield wiper
G - Normally covered by the basket weave, sometimes used for custom driving light install. Maybe Webasto Heater?
H - Typically fog light position
J - Typically rear defroster position

Looks like the start of a fun project.

User Timmy2 makes excellent replacement wiring harnesses if you're in need of that.

Thanks! That’s quite helpful. The car does have a rear wiper and did come with fog lights, so that makes sense.

I’m pretty certain G is for the gas heater as well, so that leaves B. A chrome momentary switch, I’ll have to see if I can trace what’s left of the wiring.

Thanks! I've always wanted an early 911, and bought this car in March. It’s a basket case with no engine, a victim of updating at some point, and is a very long term project, but it’s mine.

Actually, basket case is being kind, this thing has more problems than a hippopotamus.

Thanks for the tip on the harnesses.

Wouldn't that have been a rocker switch? Also, those are usually just to the left of where they mounted the rear wiper switch.

Yes, sunroof switch was a rocker switch. But in about the same location as the pull knob under the dash.

Pic is from a 73 E so may be different. Did not have a rear windshield wiper.

I'm used to seeing the sunroof switches just to left of the ignition, more like under the tank gauge.

You sure that's a 70 E? All the holes match the holes on my 89. Backdate?

I believe your buttons were changed as 69-on have the rubber buttons with inserts. The flasher is correct for a 70. I have never removed the rubber from the buttons, maybe they are like that when the rubber is removed.

The Bakelite Switch knobs and light rods are the same. In ‘68 they started putting the rubber cover and symbol lens over the original knobs as a safety measure. Take a 70 switch, pull off the dry, cracked rubber and you’ll find a pristine “early” knob.

Interesting. Was that for the whole production at the time, or a US safety measure that was later adopted for other markets?

My car was produced in Feb 1970. I'm looking at an a 27,000 mile January 1970 911T, and it appears to have the same knobs. It also has a KMH Speedometer which would seem to indicate non-North American market.

NA market. EU (ROW) still sported the "naked knobs".

Could have been other markets that required the rubber surrounds for safety. I've never gone down the rabbit hole that deep. Japan and Italy as a couple of examples had some quirks compared to the rest of the world.

74-on had new switches with rubber knobs and new symbols for all markets.

Yes. PN in my early manuals is 901.613.043.00

It's not actually shown in the exploded view but, the part is listed in the dash electrical section and also the section dedicated to the rear wiper (by the same PN).

By the look, I believe it's a Bosch switch but, I've never had the occasion to need one or have one.

Thanks - have a small hole there as a gift from a PO. Thinking I can put a switch there to turn off my radar detector if I get pulled over.
