Porsche Crest Oil Thermostat

I have disassembled my external thermostat, cleaned it, and reinstalled it after encountering some problems with oil flow to my trombone. Seems like everything is up to snuff. After looking at the xtstat while I had it out, I was curious about how the thing works. I can see that the side spring and piston perform the actual thermostat function, but the bottom spring and plunger kind of mystify me. Can anyone explain its function and how oil flows through the thermostat? Just trying to figure out what the bottom spring does...

Also, is there a special tool available for removing the caps on the thermostat? I looked around Pelican but didn't find one.

Thanks to anyone who can explain and assist.

Shawn,

What was the outcome? Did you jimmy it open, remove the element, or R&R it? What was the long term effect on your trombone?

BTW, thanks for helping me out...

Matt
