80 trans into 72?

Will a '80 915 bolt into a '72? I know the speedo is electric on the newer tranny and I think the clutch arm is different. Will the older pieces swap onto the newer tranny? If not, what is involved in the swap.

Thanks

I ran into this and struggled with it alot longer than you will. You will need to jack it up in the tunnel and find out where you are gonna have to "adjust" between the seats with a 10lb hammer. Like you said, new speedo, different half shafts to go with the later output flanges, 80 clutch cable and you may need to update the pedal shaft the runs through the pedal cluster to the later style. This will give you a chance to rebuild the cluster with bronze bushings.

If you can post a pic of the cluster now i can tell you if you have the right one, I just dont know when they changed it. The end that attaches to the cable has a bend in it, and is longer on the correct one. I struggled with clutch adjustment problems for a while until i realized that it was a combination of two things,a cracked release fork, and Dave at TRE told me to update the pedal shaft. He even knew the friggin part number!

If only they would write a third book, "101 Things to Do and Know about Porshce Transaxles and Swaps"! I think they could have a third best seller amongst the breed.

If you use the parts from your '72, then it will be direct bolt in. There are no tunnel clearance problems on the '72 and later, since they all had the 915 gearbox already. Paul's '70 had a 911 trans originally, and the center hump was smaller for these trannys.

You could also swap your nose cover and related hardware from your original trans onto the new one so you can still utilize the original speedo and speedo cable setup.

Heck, you could even use the original case from your '72, and just swap the internals from the later trans into it so you could keep the much lighter magnesium case.

Damn Tyson, that is a great idea! I never thought of swapping internals. I would just have to get the mag case modified slightly for my loop cooler. I wonder what the weight difference is between the cases?

I've held the bare cases in my hands before, and if I had to guess, I'd say it's about a 20# difference.

If you do it, I recommend using the aluminum diff side cover. This is really the only weak point of the mag case 915.
