Odometer quit in 2013

I recently purchased an '86 3.2 coupe from a family member who owned it since 1997 as his daily driver. The odometer quit working at 265,xxx and he estimated it currently has ~300k. Carfax shows it was dysfunctional in 2013. Based on his driving history 300k seems correct. I plan to repair the odometer this winter and my question is should I reset the mileage to the estimated correct number or leave it at 265,xxx?

Thx
Gordon

Not sure that you gain anything by adjusting the odometer- reality is that it can never be represented as accurate. My suggestion would be to fix it and continue to represent it with approximate mileage but TMU - true mileage unknown. This is how I handled my similar circumstance - my odometer failed and prior to having it fixed I put on only about 1000 miles, but I still consider it to be TMU.

265K miles or 300K miles or 350K miles.... absolutely no difference in price. If you sell it to someone they are not going to care one way or the other. We are not talking about the difference between 60K miles and 120K miles.

I would simply get it fixed and have it set to the guesstimate. And sure disclose this to the new owner at some point, again, they won't care.

at that many miles dont worry about it. If it were under 100k mile car maybe somebody would want it more accurate but at this point its moot

Good points. My title now notes a mileage discrepancy so it will always be TMU. As said, exact mileage is irrelevant at this point. Thanks for the input.
