Loose O-ring on G50 Shift coupler?

Hello,

I had the access panel off for the first time on my '87 911 today to test the speedo sensor. That's another issue, but I noticed a loose black o-ring just sitting on the shift coupler, and I'm not sure what it's doing or where it is supposed to be.

I've taken a photo. You can see it just above the rubber block. It's just loosely sitting there and can move around freely. It's not harming anything, but is strange.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, I do get a little rattle from time to time when starting out in 1st gear at low rpms, so I'll give this a shot.
I guess at some point someone undid the connection from the o-ring to the brake cable guide tube.

Does anyone find that this actually works?
