The gearshift lever on my 915 transmission is rotating. I can pull it back to normal position with some resistance and shift through 4th without issue. However, applying the normal force usually needed to shift into 5th and into reverse rotates the lever back out of normal position.
I have studied the shifting assembly parts drawing (attached), but cannot find anything like a set nut/screw that fixes the gearshift position above the shift-lever bearing and bearing pin. Before I start removing the console and boot to facilitate inspection and possible corrective action, can someone provide guidance on probable cause? This is my first Porsche (‘85 911 coupe), so any guidance that gets me heading in the right direction would be very much appreciated. ![]() |

To clarify, you are talking about the whole lever and not just the knob?

The upper lever is epoxied into the lower lever. I would remove the whole shifter assembly and put a few spot welds at the joint, being sure that the upper lever is in the right place before welding.

Thanks to both of you! To Locker537, you are correct, the Shift lever is rotating, not the knob. And to john walker’s workshop, that makes sense. Mirroring what you stated, the shift lever is rotating in the shift lever ball assembly. After 35 years, the epoxy has broken down and friction is the only thing holding the two shift lever components together. With your much needed help, I understand the problem and will move towards corrective action. Thanks again - very much appreciated!

Good time to replace the ball socket bushing and the shift rod bushing.
