Gas Tank Out: Now How To Clean Lines

The car was sitting for 16 years. So we've removed the fuel tank on the 83 911 SC. Getting ready to clean out the rust. How do we clean out/blow out the fuel lines. Do most people go ahead and replace the lines on an 83?

You definitely want to replace the fuel lines (mitigate fire risk) and now is the time to do it. A gentleman named Len Cummings in New Hampshire makes excellent factory-grade hose kits with an added feature that will make installation and any future replacements easier. You can email him at len.cummings@verizon.net, tell him we (Pelican friends) sent you. I’m not on commission, BTW, just a happy customer from the lines Len made for my 82 SC and more recently, my 87 924S.

Best of luck, John

Thank you John. I'm sending Len an email today. Thanks for the tip.

I can vouch for Len as well, just received new chassis lines from him last week. Going in a 1980 911 SC that’s been sitting for 12 years.

I'll chime in with the 'definitely replace your tunnel lines" crowd. The actual factory tubes in the tunnel don't really fail, it's the hoses crimped to the ends that do. Much easier to do with everything apart as you have it (easier with the engine out, but certainly not required).

I'm also a happy customer of Len Cummings and an important consideration is Len uses ethanol safe hose. As far as I know, the factory replacement hoses have not been confirmed to be ethanol safe.

I bought new factory tunnel fuel hoses for my 1986 930, they are rated for 10% ethanol. I looked up the Cohline PN on the rubber hose section. I have also purchased some lines from Len, his are also rated for ethanol, but I believe he uses stuff rated for E85, higher rating should last longer I suspect.
