I'm attempting to remove the rear wheel studs from my '85 to replace them w/ longer ones to allow for a 15mm spacer. I'm trying to do this via the method of removing the e-brake cable and pressing the studs (one by one)out the e-brake cable hole, but I don't understand how to remove the e-brake cable.
When I look into one of the holes in the hub next to the existing studs (standing on the outside of the car looking inboard), I can see a nut with a retaining pin. Do I need to remove the retaining pin and the nut through this 1/2" hole? (if so, this sounds darn hard to get back on). For those who have done this (like JW) please help with advice. Thanks. (btw, I have searched past threads, but this still seems unclear to me....please help me see the light ![]() ![]() |

Yes that is how you do it. Wouldn't it be easier to just remove the hub and press out the bolts on the bench. Just remove the cotter pin form the hub bolt then put an impact on it. On mine the impact wasn't enough(only 360 ft-lbs of torque). Heat and a 3ft Snap-on breaker bar was needed. Heinrich must of been feeling strong when he put on that bolt 34 years ago. If you pull the hub the e-brakes stay on and you will not have to readjust them later. Just a thought.

I figured it out. I was under the impression that this could be done w/o removing the caliper and rotor....but you can't.
1. Remove caliper 2. Remove rotor 3. Remove e-brake cable from hub. 4. Pound out old studs. 5. Insert new studs. 6. Using many washers and a steel nut, press/pull new studs into place. 7. re-assemble. I have the left side dane and the right side ready to pound out the old studs (but the kids are sleeping) so it will have to wait until tomorrow night. |
