Advice on selling my car to someone in another country
I have someone who wants to buy my car from Spain. It seems a little strange since he wants to buy the car without seeing it in person, and without driving it. Is there anything different about selling a car to someone in another country? He says that he has mailed a cahiers check from an American bank. I assume that as long as the check is good, there is no reason I should not sell him the car. can someone give me some insight here.

Is he sending a cashiers check and asking you to refund the amount that was overpaid? If so beware...

If the money is good, I see no problems. Don't give him the car or the title until you are sure the cashier's check is genuine. There have been problems with forged cashier's checks.

I was afraid it might be a scam. Aside from taking it to the bank and verifing that the check is good, is there any other way to tell if it is a scam? Thanks for all of the quick replies!

This theme has come before on this BB and on the Audiworld A6 BB that I frequent. A guy on the A6 BB said a buyer in Nigeria wanted to have a friend in USA send him a cashiers check for $14K for a $7K Audi, and have the seller wire him the balance to Nigeria after receiving the cashiers check. You can figure out the rest of the scam.

Yes. That's why I said to make sure the money was good before handing over car or title. On the flipside, who'd have thought some guy we never heard of in Istanbul would begin posting here, looking for a good early 911. Then see that this guy actually bought a car, sight unseen...had work done on it by a shop he'd never heard of, fly into Oregon to pick up the car, then drive it across this great country of ours to Florida, and have it shipped to Istanbul from there? Stuff happens, yeah it does. If your bank is sure the money sent is not a forgery...(they call it "collected funds")...go for it. If the buyer offers more, and asks for change back? 99.99999% sure it's a scam!

CDiercks? Just noticed that you have relatively few posts here, so may not have been here when my wild tale of another overseas buyer was posted. His name is Evren Unver. He made a photo essay type website of they car buying trip he & his bride Ruki made. The opening photo is the view from his studio window, a body of water known as the Bosphorous, then shots of his home life...page two begins the journey in Oregon, where he first touched his '71 911E. Here's a link:

Wire transfer the funds....don't take a cashier's check. The bank can charge back if it turns out to be bad.....

With all due respect let's cut this Iberian car buyer or potential buyer some slack. We haven't heard all of the details of how this guy learned of CDierck's vehicle. While CD should excercise every precaution to verify funds and not get scammed. North America does receive a large majority of the world's Porsches where the majority of these cars receive the finest care. Spain is not a third world country like some other obvious countries, I can atest to that as I spent 2-1/2 weeks last summer traveling the country. While there are cheats and theives everywhere in the world, there are also individuals with lots of money that if they found an item they really wanted they would simply send one of their representatives out to get it at whatever cost, sight unseen.
This could be a very innocent Spaniard looking for a clean German car that so happens to live in America. Cars in Spain are left side drivers. BTW: Hola Paco

Hold it a second.....
I have done business with a guy from Spain who is really into early 911's. He's completely legit... Email me off line to see if it's the same guy. By the way, some banks will allow a wire transfer to be reversed on the request of the original sender. Some won't..... so check with your bank first. regards, Eric elinden@earthlink.net |

I agree with Eric. A former President summed it up best: "Trust but verify"...

Ask for a wire transfer. Then tell your bank that you're cautious and need their confirmation when everything is ok. If they say everything is ok then why not?

I agree with Eric.
There is a guy from Barcelona who imports early 911s from California into Spain. He usually fills up a container from the West Coast every few months. (So now you know the reason for the shortage of early 911s in the US) ![]() Email me and I can also check this out for you: paco_anton@yahoo.com |
