911SC engine lid doesn't open fully

My decklid doesn't open as far as others I've seen. Seems like it must be the wrong lift support installed, right? I ordered a new one, part number 911-512-331-01. Measures 10" from center of eye to center of eye. Same as the one that is currently on the car.

So what else could cause the engine lid to open a limited amount only?

if it matters, the car is an 83 targa and the decklid is from a 3.2 carrera. The hinges i assume are original from the 83.

Should the support be longer than 10"?

Does your car have a tail? iirc, some of the cars with a tail have 2 struts to compensate for the added weight. Or maybe it was just the AC cars with the condensor? or maybe both? Are you missing a strut? share a pic!

My car has a tail. It came with dual strut on the driver's side.
Having only one is not enough, and two is too much.
Two made the lid close unevenly, so I removed the struts entirely.

I just went to the garage and my spare lift strut that measures a bit over 10"
When it was installed on the car, there was no opening issue.
So, I think you have the correct size.

Have you removed the strut to see if the lid opens more?
Also, post a photo of what you feel to be not opened fully.

Here is how far it opens with the 10" eye-to-eye lift support:

it doesn't feel like its as far up as it should be but maybe i need to compare more closely with another 911.

Sure it's the struts and not the A/C lines. Just checked and mine lifts 30 degrees above the horizontal. Do you have one of those cheap angle levels. Yours looks a bit less but not excessively.

Cut a dowel like a broom size dowel and use that to prop your lid. I mean what's the issue here?

There should be 2 positioning holes on the bracket at the firewall. Make sure the pin for the deck lid shock is installed in the rear hole towards the back of the car.

It's hard to tell with the angle looking slightly down at the car.
I would remove the strut and see how far it lifts up.
A car with a tail will have the optical illusion of opening higher.
Comparing with another car is also a good idea.

Can you take another side photo that is eye level with the lid?
