Targa top wind noise options

New to the 911 technician forum spend most of my time from the past two years on the 930 super charged forum sorting my motor . .. I'm a 356 guy had a few 911 coups over the years. . I currently have a 80 sc targa with a steel body turbo kit. And a mildly modded rebuilt 76 930 3.0l row turbo Short stroke. The car is rust free looks and runs great after a full rebuild of everything . It's my fair weather driver... My current issue is I can't get past the wind noise when the top is on. I played with the adjustment no success.
Do all targas have wind noise? I would be happy to silicone the top in place if I knew it would quite it down.. or install a hard top if I could find one. Any thoughts read all the horror stories and attempts to replace the seals. . I was thinking that a thin strip of that stuff credit cards come with that sticks them to the paper would be perfect placed on the top windshield frame then sandwich in place with the top... So what have people done to quite the wind noise. In fair weather drivers?

Thanks in advance
Regards Ned

Maybe a picture of the front targa lip to body area would help. There have been seals that raise that front lip and create some additional noise. I know my noise is mainly due to poor sealing on the side windows...the windows need adjusting to seal better. It's on my "to do " list.

My summer project or at least one of them is to try and get my Targa quieter...

There is a later seal piece that goes in front of the windshield to top seal that appears to just be a thin flap. I think it is listed in the Porsche parts catalogs; not sure what year it started in.

When I go on long trips, I leave the top on and roll the windows down so I don’t get sunburnt and also for quicker rest and gas stops. Since I won’t be removing it, I will use clear tape, I believe Gorilla was the brand to block wind from the windshield frame to top. This cuts the majority of noise.

You could just start taping up sections until you identified the leaking areas and then try and adjust windows and seal to make permanent repairs.

The top seam in the front is not perfect. but it looks to be a new top. its made out of top material not vinyl. it looks really nice but it does have a spot where the front edge beading is a little elevated. the faster i go the louder it gets .. i may try and take it apart before spring to try and reposition the piping to lower the edge. believe it or not the side windows are quiet. ill take some picture and post them when i have time .

thanks for the input.

Make sure your targa top clips are fully engaged in front, if not the skin lifts and creates a lot of wind noise at speed.

If the beading is a bit high in places, you may be able to improve this some by simply bending it down a bit with a set of pliers. There’s an aluminum plate underneath.

I also had noise problems. I replaced the front seal ( not so difficult) and took off the front clips to reposition the front lip and then put them back on again (difficult). That way the top fits a lot better to the body. But the problem comes back when you fold the top to put it in your trunk. So since last year I stopped folding the top and leave it at home and I made a vinyl "tarbrella" that I can take with me in case of sudden rain or heavy sunshine. But you can't drive the car with the tarbrella on.
Even without folding the top some of the clips sometimes unlock just by manipulating the top and you cannot always see that rightaway. So I would like to find a way to block the folding mechanism completely. Is there someone among you who already did that?Until now I couldn't find a solution.

Hello Foster,

I will take some pictures tomorrow. I'm currently replacing the liner of the targa top. Took some time to make it fit because I didn't want to use a prefab liner. I made one in perforated alcantara. Much nicer than the OEM if you ask me and better quality. I'll add pics of the liner too.
It's just a coincidence but I also have a 1984 Carrera targa.

Robin

What I used to start with is a kind of tonneau deck (I think) for a roadster. It was in the trunk of my 914 when I bought it 9 years ago but it didn't fit the 914. It was lying on the attick for a long time and since I don't wanna fold the 911 targatop anymore I had to find a solution. There were 4 straps ( 1 on each corner) that I cut off. I used 4 suction cups so I could attach it to the windows (same system as the one that's for sale from a company in Germany and that our host also sells.)

The one from Sonderwerks is OK to hold the sun out but I wonder when it starts raining if the cockpit will stay dry because it's very short.

To prevent sag I used 4 aluminum rods (from an old curtain) on the inside, I covered them with thick fabric to make it softer and on top of that I glued a sheet of vinyl to make it waterproof. Total cost around 35€.

Here are some pics of the targatop headliner I made myself from alcantara fabric. The original liner was in bad shape. It looks and feels much better now and maybe it will give some extra insulation.

Mine tends to make a lot more noise if I put it on just after it was folded up. Toward the end of last year I left it on as the weather got colder and it just seemed to form to the car better than ever after being locked into place for an extended period of time. The wind noise basically went away. Although, I'm sure this will come back next time I fold the top up. I'd be interested in that seal that goes along the front side, I've read that works pretty well.

I've chipped away at wind noise on my top for a while (new correct front seal, adjustments, etc.), but while it's better, it's still noisy. My issue is that with the front locating pins in their holes, the top won't go back far enough on the rear locating pins to sit all the way against the Targa bar and the front sits too high. If I remove the front locating pins, it goes all the way back and drops down no problem. This shouldn't be happening, but it is. I've talked to Dan Pechtel about it. Most likely what I'll end up doing is ovalizing the locating holes in the front of the top frame so that I can move the pins forward a few mm, which is all it needs. That and some more window adjustment

I never folded the top. I just put it behind the front seats. It only looked funky when parked, but on the road, it was pretty invisible plus didn’t have to mess with folding and unfolding.
