Help identify part
 

I am looking for a plug for the left side chain cover. See photo below. I ordered part #N0161553 that was in the PET but is does not fit. I bought these chain covers used to upgrade to hydrologic tensioners and need to plug this hole.

What year?
Appears to be a turbo part number. You have a turbo?

That is part of the problem. I don’t know the year of these covers since I bought them used to upgrade tensioners. The part I ordered was from the 84-89 PET figuring those were the hydrolic tensioner years. That is why I am stumped.

^ thanks. I just checked my receipt from Pelican and that is the part I ordered and it doesn’t fit my cover for some reason. It looks like part #N016553 was superseded to N016554 which is what you have and I have. That plug is 14x1.5 - the hole appears to be 12x1.5. Strange

I thought this is where a temperature switch goes which should have been in your old cover. On PET it is part no. 911 617 117 000. But this is for 1978-83. What year is your car?

The covers originally were generic to fit all engine supplied with all plugs necessary for install. The later production was not opened in as it was going to carrera production

Yes, I believe you are correct that this would be for the temp sensor. My motor is a ‘72 2.4 - the temp sensor is on the right side of the case. I guess I need to get that size and find a plug?

I suppose you could always buy and fit the temperature sensor but suspect it would cost a lot more than a plug and would look odd. However, it would allow the engine to be started; I'm assuming that you can't start it with a hole in that cover without oil escaping.

The thermo-time switch for the CIS engines is located there. It is a standard thread - 14x1.5, same as the temperature sensor in the engine case, or the extra temp sensor for the late CIS engines over on the right side chain cover.

Why yours should be 12x1.5 I have no idea, but it should be easy enough to get a short bolt of that size, shorten it further, add a crush washer, or even a silicone washer, and call it good.

Not a whole lot of pressure in the oil filled air inside the chain box, but enough to make a mess if not filled, to say nothing of leaving a path for dirt to get into the engine.
