Speaker replacement1980 sc

I have spent quite some time searching here and have no concrete info.

My car needs new rear speakers and the package shelf is coming out so
it's the perfect time to replace. However, I do not want to modify the package shelf by cutting, adding surface grills, etc.

Is there a speaker available that is a Direct Drop In for the Blaupunkt? Would like part number, mfr and source.

Thanks.

Why not leave the rear speakers out altogether? I unhooked my rears and plan to leave them out when I redo my enterior/parcel shelf and go with a clean/speakerless rear parcel shelf -- I find my upgraded front speakers to provide great sound without the rears, and found the rears (when they were hooked up) to throw off the fronts' stereo image. If you want more bass, add a small underseat powered sub.

What are you running for fronts then?

Just unplugging the rears is certainly a less expensive option.

So you never had rear speakers to begin with, is that correct? Mine never had them, so I now have Rockford Fosgate 6.5" 2-way speakers in the doors and a Kicker powered sub-woofer under the driver's seat. (On my 1980 there is a Lambda control unit under the passenger seat.) It sounds pretty good for what is a challenging environment for audio, and others have said rear speakers really don't add much in terms of sound quality. Check Crutchfield.com for compatible speakers and components, it'll give you a good starting point for what will fit.

I have the original Blaupunkts in the rear and they are fried. I have been thru Crutchfield and it does not look like they have a drop in replacement. It seems the issue is magnet depth and diameter on new speakers is considerably larger.
At this point, I think I will replace the fronts again with some better units, disconnect the rears and move on. Crutchfield has lots of options for the fronts so this should be fairly simple.

Infinity makes some good 4x6” speakers that are a direct replacement for the Blaupunkts. Do a search, I posted pics of the installation.

^^^^ I installed Infinity speakers in my '79 SC - can't guide you if any different from your '80. I bought them from Crutchfield; Infinity REF-6432cfx 4" x 6".

Mike:

I went with 5.25" separates up front and mounted the tweeter in the same approximate location used. by later 911s. I used speakers from a now-defunct company (Cambridge sound works) but see good things from others on this forum about brands such as focal and morel --

what are you using as your head unit?

Alpine CDM 7874 ca 2003.
I have been looking at focal, good price and reviews. Really don't want to add an amp/ sub.
Car gors into hibernation Thursday so lots of time to cogitate and act before April.

Mike - below is a pic of the rear deck of my '79 Targa, with mounted Infinity speakers per my post #7 above.

Exactly what I am looking for, new speakers, no cutting and stock appearance. I will find a pair.

Thanks

Jason,

Was replacing the rear speakers worth it? Thinking about the same Infinity's for my '79, but wondering if they do much as many people suggest.

Probably not - most of the sound comes from the front speakers/tweeters, which I had also replaced. But I justified the rears because I had purchased a Blaupunkt Bremen SQR 46, and wanted the benefit of new speakers all around.

Ordered some Retro Sound 4 x 6 from Crutchfield today. Decision was made based on mounting depth which is close to the original Blaupunkts.
Gotta sound better than the originals which are past it.
We shall see. I will leave them wired in series as they came from the factory. At least that's what I am thinking now. Basically a center channel.

Make sure you review the wiring. When I pulled the speakers out of my '82 Targa I noticed that they were wired together by the factory. Not right/left wiring, but only one channel.

Good luck.

Same with mine. More or less a mono center channel, I believe. Was a hot set up in the late '70s. May leave as is with new speakers. Or run wires for the driver's side. Not sure yet.

Ordered a pair of Infinity Reference 6432 cdc speakers after frying to mount the Retro Sound 4 x 6 units. The Retros are way small for the mounting studs. The Infinity units are better but also small.
Noodles a bit and used the U shaped clamps for holding a wire rack to the wall to hold the speakers in place. I cut one leg of the U flush with the bracket center and then slipped them over the studs and against the speaker frame. Removed leg on the speaker and remaining leg against the package shelf. Clamp stays level and speaker stays in place.
Voila!!
Now I'm waiting for my rewebbed seat belts to arrive Tuesday so I can reassemble everything and test it.
Still evaluating leaving the rears as the factory set up - mono center channel or running a wire for a standard 2 channel arrangement.

My 80 is a bottom mount on the package shelf and I am/ was unwilling to cut or modify the shelf. Surface mount would not have been an issue with either speaker.
The original Blaupunkts are slightly larger than 4 x 6. Metric???
