carfax info
Hi Guys,
I bought a 1987 3.2 convertible in Miami some time ago and received it today in Belgium. It is a two owner 47k miles original car, but I would like to know if the milage is correct. Maintenance book came with the car, but I didn't know it was only stamped till 16k miles - 1988. No other invoices with the car which make me question the mileage. Is there a way to trace some history on the mileage in Miami (carfax or inspections)? The dealer seems to have a real good reputation. Cheers, Nico |

I traded in a 2005 BMW 520 and the dealer was a friend of mine.
I told him up front that the car had hit a deer and caused 8K in damage and also was rear ended and caused 9K in damage. Both repairs were made by BMW Dealer Body shop and paid for by AAA Insurance. Neither accident showed up on Crafax. It blew him away. because he always runs a Carfax on all trade in's. What a waste of time and money. It is only as good as the information submitted. No info, No report.

Thats not ok, I thought every accident needed to be reported?
I bought a Carfax as I just heard a friend who bought a California import 911 3.2 with 120k miles and after receiving the Carfax it showed 320k miles... |

Close friend bought a Shelby Mustang from a third party in N. Carolina. He did get the CARFAX report, and it showed no accidents and clear title. However, after receiving the car and making some changes to the bumpers and spoilers, he discovered that the front of the car had a different VIN number than the back of the car. In other words, the front part of the car was from one Shelby and the back part of the car was from another. He ran the two VINs through CARFAX, and both came to back to cars with clean titles and neither had been in an accident. CARFAX would not honor their buy back guarantee saying that salvage titles and accident reporting from their sources can take up a year and it was not their fault. He went to an attorney and there’s pending legal action.
It turns out that CARFAX does not receive any records from perhaps the biggest source of information about wrecked vehicles, insurance companies. The fine print on the bottom of a CARFAX report admits the company's records aren't 100 percent reliable. They do not have all accidents listed as many have never been reported, or may only have been reported to a source to which CARFAX does not have access. CARFAX gets information from motor vehicle bureaus, only some insurance companies, auto auctions, repair and service facilities, rental companies, state inspection stations, fire departments, law enforcement agencies, and vehicle manufacturers. But that's not every single source of information. Those sources are the big ones, but no way that one of these reports can be all-inclusive. It’s a tool, but not a totally reliable and we can’t rely solely on their reports.

If two people/two vehicles do the same but both decide to keep it between them then the same.
