Oil Type for 3.6L Varioram

I recently purchased a 1970 RSR clone with a 3.6L Varioram from a 1997 ( believe) 993. Leakdowns were 6-7%. Top end was done about 1000 miles ago. I'm experiencing some smoke during lighter driving but not all the time. I do not see this during or after harder driving.

A guy at the auto store recommended Kendall Synthetic 30W oil at it might potential help. Thoughts on this? or what could be causing the smoke? I believe there is synthetic oil, but have not changed it yet.
