76 911 narrow hotrod build
Good evening Pelicanites! My name is Jason and I have been building a hotrod 911 on and off for the past 4 years and it’s finally nearing completion. What started out as replacing my power flag mirror with a chrome one, turned into a much needed paint job, which turned into disassembling most of the car, which turned into a full hotrod build (3.4 twin plug). I had a thread going in the paint and bodywork forum (see below) and had not really kept up with it past the paint and bodywork part, so I thought I would start a new one here and try to catch up (apologize in advance for what will seem like a lot of posts). Ive learned a lot so far, many thanks to the community on here who have helped out by answering questions and Pitching in, particularly Duane Wik, Shaun Budka and Andrew Darud not to mention the hundreds of great threads that I searched through. As I get closer to brining this car back to life I am sure I will need more help with getting everything back to working order. Stay tuned!
Paint and Bodywork can be found at the link below, including the tucked front and rear bumper mod. Mid-Year Humane Society - 76 re-fresh Here’s what I started with, 76 911s GP White/Russet Red 2.7. I found this car at the local cars & coffee In 2010 and after speaking with the owner he was looking to sell it so we struck a deal and I had it later that day. ![]() ![]()

Here are a few highlights from the paint work. I moved the front bumper in an 1”, rear 3/4” (see link for details Mid-Year Humane Society - 76 re-fresh) added a custom tartan side script inspired by a car in the Porsche museum, using the interior color and began re-assembly.

Great to hear the car is nearing completion. I don’t do well with unfinished stories so I had to ask when I read through the build thread.
![]() I love the way your tucked in bumpers look! Yet I can’t help but wonder how the front would look with a 964 smile. There’s something about the width of the smile in relation to the depth of the bumper. Subscribed! -Diederick

Congrats Jason, I've been watching this build for years and admiring your attention to detail. The engine build is spectacular and should really be noted. I hope you treat us with some pics or even video of the 3.4 twin plug engine from Andrew. I really like the tucked bumpers too. The paint and body is exceptional. The narrow-body with a 3.4 is going to be a ridiculously fun driving experience.

@Ginger77 good idea i might try a 964 smile next time i fiddle with the front end. Duane - definitely lots of pics and video coming! Interior was by far the most difficult for me as I have never done this kind of work so learned a lot for the first time, and the material for this interior was very hard to find. Was lucky to buy a few yards of original Russet red vinyl material 7 years ago, and worked with Robert Budd at Classic 9 to find some really close matched carpet and edging. Great resource for 911/912/930 during the mid to late 70s is “Carrera 2.7” by Robert Snodgrass, lots of great photos which came in handy. Factory sound deadening came out very easily, new sound deadener in and carpet. Also made my own ribbed-rubber floor mats (thanks amazon prime

That interior looks lovely! The rubber mats fit in great too. Good find! I’m going to check vendor for that one too. That should keep my beige carpet neat and tidy with bad weather.
No rear seatbelts for the child seat, though? ![]()

Oh my! Please post all the pics and details you can share with us. This ‘76 looks stunning, and it resonates well with me in particular: I’m a somewhat recently new owner of a 912E 3.0 and your interior / exterior color scheme is my all time favorite whether it’s 911’s, vintage Vettes, whatever!
Look forward to reading your paint & body thread soon as well. The project looks stunning. |

...not a big fan of the 'holey' shift coupler plate.
You are going to be surprised at the amount of dirt/dust/leaves/grass/coins that find their way into that compartment. Otherwise, very nice combination of luxo and retro. Bill K

Nice work. That red interior is awesome.
Is there a separate build thread on the 3.4?

Thanks for the comments, Ginger77 - the material to make those mats can be found here on here for $24 Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Rubber-Cal-Ramp-Cleat-Rubber-Floor-Mat/dp/B07C4197D9. Engine pics and details will be coming, stay tuned.
Headliner - this was a first, after my car sat at an upholstery shop for 11 months, I pulled it and decided to take on the interior myself starting with the headliner. Cool thread below where you can borrow the clips to install your headliner as you need a lot of them and various sizes. This is a very tedious job but totally doable. Laid the headliner out in the sun for a few days to get the wrinkles out, then found the center of the car and headliner and got it into its initial position, lots of measuring and repositioning, take it slow. One tip that I picked up on a thread somewhere was regarding the rear “wings”. Fully glue and clip the lower portion first, the area around the quarter window openings. After that area is fully dry, pull all of the clips before you pull/stretch/clip the upper wing area that wraps around the rear window opening. the clips around the rear quarter area can pull the headliner inward toward the body and when these are released you can have some unwanted sagging or wrinkles there. Long story short, do the bottom of the rear wings first, take the clips off before you do the top area. I used a heat gun to gently warm up areas where the clips left an indentation in the material and massaged them out by hand. Tedious but satisfying, another job that without this forum (and Duane’s DIY thread) my car might still be sitting at the upholstery shop.... Pay-it-forward headliner clip thread ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

With a new found confidence after the headliner install, the pillar posts were up next. My son Max pitched in and helped out with the vinyl work
![]() I also found some foam that was about the same thickness and density as i found behind the door vinyl which I glued on before wrapping the red vinyl. I kept all of the original pieces and took lots of pictures before carefully removing them so that they would make great patterns for the new material. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Jac1976 - not sure if this will be ready for HCR, patiently waiting on the gearbox, hopefully next week... Guages restored by Seattle Speedo, super fast turnaround and really nice work, found these sport seats a few years ago and had them redone at Autobahn in the original Russet Red and added the tartan centers. Also hand painted the door edging, scuffed up with a red scotch-brite and used the Eastwood Chassis Black paint with has a little more gloss than what I could see from my disassembly photos but it was close enough and only a small strip shows once the door panels go on there.

Wow that looks great.
The look of that interior reminds me of the original seats on my '76. They were black vinyl with blue tartan center sections. The bumper tuck is subtle and superb. |

Carbster09 & TwoBluPorsches - thanks for the comments! Window frames were stripped/polished/anodized by Shaun Budka at Tru6. These are truly a work of art when done right, Shaun is a perfectionist and these turned out amazing. I reassembled the rears myself, took it slow not to scratch them and used lots of soapy water and a large clamp as a third hand which was a tip I picked up somewhere on this forum. Using genuine Porsche seals the rears were really hard to fit to the car, my guess is that they are slightly off from the original or the rubber is slightly more dense and therefore make tough to fit. Either way be sure that the little relief near the quarter hinge lines up, my LH and RH side outer seals were mis-packaged by Porsche which took a while to figure out.. spent a few days carefully re-aligning the doors and latches, then the window frames which was a learning experience, also in the process had to replace the driver side window motor as that was worn out.
