Fuchs 16x9 and tire selection
 

Quick question. Can you fit 225/50/16 tires on 16x9 Fuchs? I already have a new set of tires in this sizes for the rears and looking at a pair of 16x9s to replace my 16x7s. Eventually I will get 245s in the back. Just wanted to make sure it will work ok for the time being. The tires are Michelin Pilorlt Exalto PE2. Also will there be any potential clearance problems inside the rim on a 1986 Targa narrow body. Thanks!

225/50 x16 is spec'd to 8" max, I've gone up to .5" over but that's too much

That’s what I figured, thanks fir the feedback. Do you know if the wheel fit for 16x9 has any issues with a stock 86 targa in the rears?

for oe 9x16ET15 w/ 245/45 x16 tires, No issues what so ever, I used those way, way back in the day on a very low car

Stuttgart86 -- you might want to consider 16x8 Fuchs for the rear. They will run 225/50-16 just fine and can also fit 245/45-16 if you want to go that way. To the extent you're looking to fill out wheel wells, much of the extra 1" of the 16x9 is inside the hub, so both sit similarly farther out than 16x7 rears. Note that, if you're moving the 16x7s up front, some folks (me included) need to roll their front inner fender lips to keep them from snagging on the outer edge of the front tires (and pulling the fender lip out).

16x9 need 245/45

the 16x9 hat et15 ant sits perfect in the rear wheel well.
the outer is a tad more inside compared to a 8x16 et10(11) with its 225/50

Bill is correct on tire spec, however, I have run 225/50x15 on 9" for many years primarily on track. I originally built the 9s specifically because I felt the 8" was too narrow for modern DOT R or slicks and suspension. I personally would not run wider tires on the 9" rim...Toyo 225/50 is better on the 9" than their 235/50

I don't know for sure but this may only apply to the 50 series...not sure 225/45x16 would work as well.

FYI I run 205/50 on 8" front for same reason

Just my experience - I'm not saying it will work in your situation and neither I nor anyone else that I'm aware of has told me this is safe.

205/50 x16 on an 8 is only stretched an extra .5", as I said you can usually get away w/ that

The issue is that the sidewall needs to flex some, mounting on an overly wide wheel limits the flex, the more stretch the more stress and less compliance, It certainly also increases ride harshness and possibly grip to a point, similar to tire pressures, increasing pressure to a point is beneficial for grip, but beyond that point you lose grip and increase ride harshness for no benefit.


I have no data on any 235/50x16 tires but suspect that while it may be ok to fit on a 9 it is also too tall

i use to have on my 9th on the back 245/50/16 but those tires are no longer available...the car looked with those more robust--so i`m using 245/45/16 had to do a lot of rear alignment adjustment(mainly lower it) after a while i got used to the looks ..

245/50x16 fits fine on a 9, the problem is it's over 26" tall, compared to the more usual 245/45 x16 the taller tire loses ~17lb-ft of torque due to the OD alone, more when when weight gets factored in
