Need Help!! Can't get the tie rod out.

Follow 101 Project instruction for "Turbo tie rod upgrade", tie rod end is out and the plastic sleeve is open up. But having a hard time to loosen the tie rod. Is there any special tool or trick for this task? Thanks in advance!

Hi Andy,

I used the tie rod itself, just angle it down and use it as a wrench!

Cheers

Thanks, Tim. I have tried this method. May be mine is too tight, after twisting it for only 45 degree, I can't go any further. Mmmm

Andy,

If it's really stuck you may have to remove the rack so you can get it on a bench.

Cheers

Andy,
Try using a LARGE screwdrive wedged into the opening at the joint where you angle the tie rod arm down. It will give you leverage when you don't have any with the arm. Also, Try making a V with the arm and the screwdriver and turning out the tie rod. This worked for me.

Dave

Our host sells a special tie rod tool with a spanner on one end (for removing the stock tie-rod) and an open wrench on the other (for installing the turbo tie rod). I used it and it was a breeze to remove the existing tie rod. It's inexpensive enough to buy even for a one-time use job. The right tool will always pays for itself in time and frustration.

Just went thru this on my 78 SC. Really can't use the old tie rod as a lever here due to the positioning of the front sway bar and I have also been warned by two full time Porsche wrenches that they do a good business in replacing steering racks that have been damaged by "too much torquing..both removing and installing turbo rods" Get the wrench mentioned above..30 seconds til complete relief! (Well....)

You are SO CLOSE to having exceptionally easy steering: pull that rack and do the grease!

Andy,

I did mine this winter and managed to do it by wedging a big screwdriver in the oldtie rod's opening. It turned out to be easier that it looked. Perseverance 1/8th a turn at a time.
